Question about 1984 Toyota Cargo

Open Question

1884 Toyota van starts fine when cold, but sometimes won't start when hot. Just replaced starter & solenoid, but same problem (worse). Formerly would start after cooling off for 15-30 minutes. Today finally started after cooling off for 3 hours, just as the tow truck arrived! Is there an "interlock switch" that prevents car from starting when it is not in park? Could this be the cause of starter not turning over?

Have you gotten this problem fixed yet? If not what is the condition of the battery cables( corrosion free)? Also how old is the battery? One dead cell could possibly cause this problem.

If you go to your library you can look for free. Just not sure of location of of neutral safety switch for your year of car. In the back of motor manual is wire diagrams you will find switch there. Also GEO Prism is the same car.
  2. The last time I worked on a Prism it was a 1997 I found a bad wire connection at the shifter. Took 20 minutes to do repair and no parts.
  3. So I would check the switch in your console. Sometime they stick or a wire comes loose. Sometimes a little WD-40 shot to the switch helps.

My van will start then shut off after 3 or 4 times it wont turn over but every thing works

Sometimes a starting motor will work when cold but once it is hot it won't function. I would start there. When you run into the problem again Try crossing the solenoid to see if the starter will work then. If it won't work it sounds like is is "dragging" replace starter with new or rebuilt one. Don't throw away old one because there will be a core charge.

1995 toyota celica starts up when cold and will run until i get wherever i need to go. Then if i shut off and try to restart it doesnt make any clicking noise and wont try to turnover until cold.

So when your engine is hot the starter won't engage. Try cleaning and tightening the wires that are bolted to your starter first. You want bare shiny metal to metal at all your connections. Take care when unbolting the wires because you could strip or break the studs on the solenoid. If this doesn't help then I would say the solenoid is going bad and will need to be replaced. It's usually a good idea to replace the starter and solenoid as one unit. Hope this helps.

When my truck gets hot it doesn't want to start. Sometimes if you wiggle the key it will start, but when it doesn't start, it makes a clicking noise.

the clicking noise is most likely coming from the solenoid on the starter motor, the solenoid is like a big switch with contacts inside of it,when you turn the key to start the engine these contacts come together to transfer the power to the starter motor,if the solenoid can't be taken apart & the contacts cleaned or replaced it will have to be replaced.......hope this helps....cheers

Sometimes I turn the ignition key to start my 2007 4.7 v-8 tundra pickup & I just here a click after trying several times the starter engages . Not several clicks just one . After checking battery...

The problem is the starter solenoid. It will steadily get worse until it just won't start anymore. The solenoid has corrosion between the contacts. When you turn the key the contacts are not making connection. The corrosion will get a little worse each time you crank it.

What's the deal? it's not the battery. lights/radio everything is good just as the others have described, you hear a click when you try to start it, but that's it. will not start. and it ran fine all day.

Dirty battery connections, yes all the electronics only needs minimal amps but the car needs a full charge (14.2 volts) to start. Clean the battery post and cable, then drive by your neighbor hood auto parts (Auto Zone/ Kragen) for a free charging system check up. Also cold crank amps are important if you live any were but California ;)

1999 Toyota 4-Runner sometimes won't start

Sounds like the starter is getting ready to go out. I'd look at being ready to replace it soon. If it is a stick shift transmission car, you can PUSH start the car, but you probably want to get it done before this happens. This is what mine did, click, click, start, over a period of about 2 weeks before it finally went out. Replaced it, starts first time every time now.

Hope this helps.

Random dead battery with 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 ltr QC

The starter solenoid has a bad contact inside in delivering current to the starter. When it is cold the battery weaker than normal so it can not provide enough current to the starter since there is big resistance path from the bad solenoid preventing enough current to turn the starter to crank up the engine. Replacing the starter solenoid will take care of this problem.
