Broken Tension Pulley on a 2003 Ford Zx2

I am trying to replace a broken Tension pulley on my 2003 Ford Zx2. I removed the underskirt and can get to the area of the pulley. The old pulley fell apart and left the back half still attached to the engine. I was able to remove 2 bolts but the third is awkwardly positioned behind some type of hard line that is right in front of it. I tried to use a wrench but even if I can get the strength to loosen it, there is no place for it to come out. What do I need to do?

You will probably have too remove the line thats in the way. it's probably a power steering line.if you are very carefull, you might be able to move it just enough to get at it. they usually have clips to hold them in place. look for the nearest clip and loosen. good luck

How to replace a serp belt on 1998 escort zx2

The belts are pretty simple. There will be 1 pulley that is spring loaded to hold the tension. That pulley usually has a fitting for a breaker bar or rachet to use as a handle to move the bracket. Most people make the mistake of trying to slip the new belt over an unaccessible pulley. Just contract the spring loaded pulley with a breaker bar or if it on top, your body weight. Then slip the slack of the belt around any top pulley and let go of the tension arm. Everything should tighten up.
The Fixya site has been changed and should not have allowed messages to dead end in Experts' mailboxes. It should have directed you to an available Expert.

I'm trying to replace the serpentine belt on a 2002 ford escort zx2 but i can't seem to locate tensioner pulley

It may be like this:

"I just installed a belt on a 1998 ZX2 and used the tension release tool from underneath the car (safely jacked up and blocked) You should remove the right front wheel and plastic splash shield from wheel well (10mm socket). Use the tensioner release tool from underneath and rotate it towards the rear of the engine until you meet the lower heater hose. At this point, have another person use a tire iron / long screw driver, etc. to jam the tensioner pulley in place in order to get another "bite" on the tensioner pulley center bolt (use 13MM socket on the tool) You should have the entire belt pre-routed except for the AC pulley. This is the easiest one to install the belt on once tension has been released. Check for any looseness on the other idler pulleys as well as component pulleys."

Good luck! (rate if useful!!)

Zx2 ford escort pully tensioner need to know where to lossen trying tpo change alternator

Use a 13 mm wrench and turn the tensioner bolt like you are trying to tighten it. This will swing the arm away from the belt and release tension. The tensioner is just above and between the a/c compressor pulley and the crank pulley.

Need 2001 ford escort zx2 DOHC engine information, belt diagrams

The tensioner is between the a/c compressor and crank pulley, below the power steering pump. Use a 13 mm wrench to 'tighten' the bolt in the center of the pulley and it'll move to release tension off the belt.

My serpentine belt came off but not broken, do i need to replace the tensioner pulley when i replace the belt

When you get the new belt compare it's length to the old belt. Belts will stretch over time but usually not enough to cause them to pop off. Chances are the pulley is going bad. If you can move the tensioner with your hand it's time to change it.

What is the proper way to replace a belt idler in FORD ESCORT ZX2

Take the tension off the belt using a long handeled breaker and the appropriate size socket on the center bolt of the tensioner pulley. It will usually move to the left, Use great care in placing the socket so you are positive that it cannot slip. I've been bitten before and it hurts greatly. While the belt is relaxed, which takes some pulling, slide it off any of the top pulleys, just one. Your idler pulley is held in place with one bolt through the center. unbolt it and place the new one in place and tighten it up. After this put your elbow grease to work again on the tensioner and slip the belt back over the pulley you took it from. Before you let the tensioner release make sure the belt is sitting properly in ALL of the pulleys. Actually, when you remove the belt originally it's a good idea to hold it up and away by hooking it anywhere with an old coathanger or a resonabe facimile. Thank, Dana

Tension pulley has fallen off and needs replacing

The tension pully should be accessable from the top of the fender. If one of th bolts broke, then an easy out will have to be utilized to remove the old bolt . Yes it could be wear and tear that makes this happen.
