Hello jblain11...No...very hot is NOT normal and needs to be corrected now to prevent internal engine failures...Heat kills! When you say "very hot" is this what the gauge is telling you...is the coolant boiling over? Is it actually HOT or a possible false reading? Start by checking the cooling sensors... The SENSOR is located towards the fron of the engine on top of the intake manifold. The temp SENDER is located on left side of the engine block near number 1 spark plug, they could be faulty or corroded.
Check your radiator cooling fins for obstruction, air must pass through to properly cool. Check fans and clutches. Check thermostat...might be sticking,..replace if needed with 170-180 degree. Check radiator cores internally for no obstruction and good circulation. Back-flush have it rodded out or replaced if needed. Check water pump, make sure the input shaft is turning the impeller to circulate coolant, Check radiator cap for proper PSI rating and good seal....
Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

High milage? Try engine cleaner, run for couple hundred miles and then use an additive like Restore. If it's just dirt this may help. Make sure you are using the correct viscosity oil for winter temps. If it's from wear only parts replacement will fix it.
