2005 Mitsubishi Lancer, replaced serpt. belt then when i turned on the air, it started squealing and couldn't steer..it was like it locked up. Asked a friend they said my air conditioner compressor is going out if not already gone out. Does that sound right?

Hello mirabella9x....yes this is possible...if the clutch on the a/c compressor or the bearings are seizeing it would cause the belt to squeel due to friction....the pulley isnt turning...
You should still be able to steer the car though. Check your power steering pump and the fluid level to make sure it's not the problem. If it's not turning freely or trying to lock up, it would cause the belt to squeel.
Check to make sure the routing on the new belt is correct and all pulleys, idlers and tensioners are ok and rotating freely with the engine running.
Good luck..i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

No that has nothing to do with it, i had that same problem first of all the serpt. belt is hooked up to the power steering pump, check the level and if its full the pump is not getting caught by the belt. what you should try is get a big screw driver push it towards the belt so if you are trying to tighten it and adjust the power steering pump, sometimes it gets loose as you try to change the pump

there is no need to guess, , answer use tools.
this was true in 1920 and now, belts then and now all can squeal.
in the old days we had many belts and could drop them
then comes, SERP belts. one for all.
we dont have 1.3 swifts here, so cant see belt routing.

if this has an automatic belt tensioner on it this sounds like the tensioner is weak and needs replacing. a weak or bad tensioner does and can cause belt squealing and can throw the belt alignment off causing your problem.

Remove the belt and check those parts. Spin them by hand The alternator should spin freely. The PS pump will have more drag on it. Also check the tensioner and idler pulleys. When turning them Feel for roughness. All these should be smooth turning. No bumps or grinding. One of them is going to be tight or rough. The PS pump will move in and out a bit, this is normal.

2003 Lancer ES High pitch squeal and constant squeak

Shortly after replacing the serpentine belt in my lancer, the same thing happened. It is NOT the timing belt. Belts squeal when they slip. If your timing belt slipped it would cause your car to run funny.

have somebody check the belt for wear (or do it yourself), replace if necessary. If it doesn't need replacement, just tighten it.

If you have the 4cyl engine that I have, the tightening is kind of a pain in the ****. Not a great design by mitsubishi. There's a pulley near the front right corner of the engine in front of the alternator. the belt should be running around this pulley GROOVE SIDE OUT. This is the tension pulley.

To tighten:
1) Lightly loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley (slightly loosen, DO NOT REMOVE).
2) Under that pulley there's another bolt. You can see that the bolt goes through a piece of metal
attached to the back of the pulley. Figure out which way you need to turn the bolt to move the
pulley toward the front of the car. (i don't remember if it's right hand thread, or left hand) This
puts extra tension on the belt. You probably don't need much. Over tensioning the belt can
cause pulley bearing failure. If you haven't done this work before, ask someone for
help
. It's better to tighten a little bit, a few times rather than overtighten once.
3) Don't forget to ReTighten the bolt in the center of the pulley.

If there's lots of cracks and pieces missing on the ribs or grooves of the belt you should replace it first.

Happy repairing,
Cliff

2002 mitsu belt squeal.

I don't really want to say this but It seems that you may have installed a smooth belt instead of a ribbed belt on one of the components.
