Car is not gettin Gas

I had the same exact probelm. I drove for 20 miles the car stalled out and would not start. I had it towed back to the house. I jumped it. Drove for about 2 minutes and stalled again. And then i bought a new battery, plugs and wires. Still wont start up. And when it does it doesnt stay running for long. However, if i spray starting fluid in the air intake it will start up and run.

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I have not replaced the fuel filter or the pump. The filter looks like it is fairly new i did take a look at today. And when i turn the key on i can hear the pump going. However it could be clogged like you said. I also hear that there is somesort of a "spidergear" inside or under the intake that has something to do with the fuel distribution. IF you have any other solutions or ways for my to dignose the problems or how to eliminate certain things that are not the probelm. Thanks alot to everyone helping me out.

I actually was told to turn on and off the car about 15 times and listen to the fuel pump. It was making a buzz sounding like it was working. It stayed constant. Then i addes 2 more gallons of gas and tried the on off meathod again and the fuel pump was not making the buzzing noise... i got nothing.

Im assuming that the fuel pump was trying to work and either dying or not working properly. Does this sound right.

I would test the pressure however i do not have the tool required to do that job.

You could have a clogged fuel filter you didnt say if you have replaced it ;the fuel pickup in the tank could also be getting clogged when engine is off the trash in the tank settles down then when it cranks it runs for a few minutes until the trash clogs it up again

dont let the looks of the outside of the filter fool you i recommend changing it first it sounds like you have a pump gone out you can hear it running but its not putting out enough pressure to crank the engine

Hi, sounds like your fuel pump is going out, not giving enough fuel pressure.

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2009

Hi, look on the fuel rail under the hood going to the engine for a valve that has a plastic screw type cap on it, like a car tire valve cap. Connect a fuel-pressure tool this valve to check your fuel pressure. If the fuel pump is bad, this test will help.

Hi, well to keep it simple, you narrowed the problem to a fuel related problem. Since there are many components to the fuel system, fuel regulators, fuel sensors, pressure regulators, computer, wires (one frayed wire will do what your describing too, and I can't see the car, it is best to take the car to a mechanic or someone who has a fuel pressure gauge tool. From my experience, fuel pumps either work or they don't meaning it is very rare for a pump to start "dying", it will either turn on or never turn on again.

Pathfinder troubleshooting

What have you replaced recently? One man in UK replaced a relay unit in the igniton wiring with one that fit and worked perfectly for 11 minutes and 46 seconds exactly, then all power in the engine was lost. Turn the key to off, turn on, start engine, perfect for another 11 minutes and 46 seconds, ad infinitum.he drove 1100 miles including motorways with this fault, on, off, on, off....
At home he found that the relay that fitted perfectly was the type of relay for the rear window Heater on a French brand of car..the one which turns off after 11 minutes and 46 seconds.
it's a long shot but did you?........
Please get back to us with the solution as it may help someone in the future.......

96 Benz ran out of gas other day, got it filled up & drove home (20 miles). Next day drove about 40 miles, left car running in park for about 15 min, when I left car was stalling like it was running o

You never leave a car running, as it will
overheat the Exhaust Converter
When you run out of fuel, you sometimes
ruin the Fuel Pump
It depends on gas to lubricate it,as strange as it sounds
Check fuel pressure & volume at the motor with a gauge

97 buick regal gs runs fine until warm then stalls and will start for more than a second. sometimes when i give it gas it will rev for another second then stall

When the engine warms up the engine computer goes into closed loop mode and relies primarily on the O2 sensors and the MAF sensor to calculate the correct fuel to air mixture - if one of the O2 sensors is fouled or the MAF sensor is not working properly, this can cause the problem.
Given the age of the car, I would also check the idle air control (IAC) and channels, the EGR valve and the throttle body for carbon buildup.
