Question about 1999 BMW 318 ti

My m44 engine in my BMW 318ti wont start, lots of work done..help

Hi so my car wont start, i bought it as a suspected head gasket failure (loss of compression). So far i have had the cyliner head pressure tested and skimmed, replaced the head gasket, replaced the spark plugs and re set the timing (this was done with a home cut template and bolt etc but looks straight). It turnes over and sounds healthy but wont start when your cranking it, fuel is there, the spark is there, its started say maybe 3 times out of 50 on its own but the rest of the time it just cranks over and over.
The strange thing is that it bumpstarts no problem and can be driven but pisses its water out as the raidiator is leaking from the seam so it needs a new one but i dont want to purchase untill iv solved the starting issue.
It drove well when i bump started it for the short distance it went so why is it not starting from the key,
ANYBOSY PLEASE HELP MY OTHER HALF IS GOING MAD AND I CANT DEAL WITH HER STRESSING ANYMORE.........

Just had headgasket replaced on 98 318ti m44 head was milled was put back together and it starts and runs but it sounds like a diesel at idle and is low on power would the timing be off causing the noise...

It's hard to diagnose from here, timing might make it run rough and loss of power, but a diesel sound at idle, that don't sound like the timing! If I was to guess, and it is just a guess mined You, I would say the head work didn't turn out as planed!

Hi I need help with my 2004 Freelander TD4: suddenly blue/white smoke coming out the back of the car ( the car did not over heated the heat gauge was at normal position) notes that there was oil leaking...

cracked block. once it heats up the crack gets bigger and the oil gets thinner which makes more oil burn. run car without the oil cap on and see if lots of air/ oil comes out if so thats blow by and you need a new engine.

Bmw m44 engines heavy water loss

If your car is loosing coolant, there might be an exterior leak, or an interior leak. First check and make sure that radiator cap is tight and the rubber sealer is intact, there can be many other reasons ...hole in the coolant hose, leaking radiator, heater core, water pump, intake manifold and more... Check and see if there is any puddle of coolant on the ground, if so you can find where the coolant is coming from.
There must be an internal leak, a blown cylinder head gasket. See if the bottom of the oil cap looks like somebody spit on it, if so then coolant mixing with the oil, when the engine is running see if there is any white smoke at tail pipe. If engine overheats, and there are air bubbles in the coolant bottle "boiling", this could indicate a bad cylinder head gasket too.

My 318ti is useing lots of water

By he sounds of it... you need a mechanic ASAP. if you car is using water, it has to go somewhere and that would be your oil pan.
Do not start this car again.
Your mechanic need to reolace the Head Gaskets or needs to to replace the head.
Water runs thru the engine, and sometime the gasket will blow and the the water goes to the lowest point which is the oil pan

Oil leak and orange oil light stays on briefly after starting up, also slight water leak. i suspected head gasket at first but eliminated that after the combination of these two faults causing fluid loss....

why eliminate head gasket? head gasket failure can cause loss of both fluids. i suspect the oil light is lost oil pressure because the head gasket is toast or the head is now warpped and thus leaking. you should be able to see signs of leakage around the head.

do you see any oil getting into your rad? if not then the oil must be leaking around the head.

White heavy exhaust out of tailpipe when first starting after engine is off for awhile

Hi Peggy,

White smoke is indicative of water involved in the combustion process. How it got there is the question. It could be as simple as condensation or as serious as a head gasket failure.

Things to check:
  • Loss of coolant
  • Oil mixed with the coolant
  • Loss of power
The good news is that it only occurs with the engine cold. Have a compression check done on each cylinder. That will rule out a blown head gasket.

verify the engine cooling fan runs at idle without the AC on, it should come on around just past 1/2 scale on the temp guage, do not let it overheat! these engines have aluminum cylinder heads and u can blow the head gasket out, let me know the results

it's head gasket or water pump, or if you are lucky the thermostat is broken.
