Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

The turn signal relay keeps ticking even after the turn signal switch is in the off position. when I hit the brakes it stops, but if I press too hard on the brakes it makes a rapid clicking noise. The thing is the turn lights don't come on when this happens, only when I turn the signal lights on do they come on. and so far there are no warning lights on the dash. Plus a friend of mine pushed down a little on the 4-way flasher switch on the top of the steering column, and it went away if he held it in a certain position. I've been told it's a bad ground but where do I start? Please help

I had the same problem and I took the switch a part due to the almost $600 new one. You have to be patient everything is plastic. But once a part I found that the contacts were tracking ( a lot of dirt and grease build up.). The steering wheel doesn't need to come off just remove the two plastic covers. remove the two hex screws that hold it and disassemble it the switch will have to be torn down further and there is the copper contacts in there wipe with rag and re-assemble. Saved me $600 for part and probably 300-400 for labour.
Total time from start to finish 2hrs. Hope this helps.

If ucan find it see if there is a little hazard triangle next to the car radio ... normally positioned at thtop middle .... if so then click it ... if not then find your hazard button and click it ..... note:car needs to be in park to do this.

The dome lights were flashing inside of 1998 gmc suburban. I pulled the dash cover and unpulged the wirer clip to the dome- head light switch. Then I got a clicking nose. I looked under dash and found the clicking nose to be coming from the part, gm11516051. What do I do from here?

Stop Lamps
The brake pedal position sensor is a resistive device used to sense the action of the driver's application of the brake pedal. The brake pedal position sensor provides an analog signal that will increase as the brake pedal is pressed.
The brake pedal position sensor receives both a 5-volt reference voltage and a low reference signal from the electronic brake control module (EBCM). When the brake pedal is pressed, a variable signal is applied from the brake pedal position sensor to the EBCM through the brake sensor signal circuit. The fuse block left rear supplies battery positive voltage to the bass relay switch through the BASS fuse. One side of the bass relay coil is permanently grounded at G402. The EBCM supplies voltage to the bass relay coil upon receiving the signal from the brake pedal position sensor. The switch contacts of the bass relay close and battery positive voltage is applied through the bass relay switch to the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL), and to the turn signal/hazard flasher module through the stop lamp switch signal circuit. Do you know where the rear fuse box is ? Check BAS fuse 15amp. and the bas relay , should be marked on the inside of the fuse box lid . The rear fuse box is located

The brake light switch is an input to the BCM - body control module , do you know about BCM'S - electronic module ?
Stop Lamps
When the driver presses the brake pedal, the switch contacts open and battery positive voltage is interrupted to the BCM. The BCM then supplies voltage to both the turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuit and trailer rear turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuits. The BCM also supplies voltage to the CHMSL though a dedicated circuit.

Circuit/System Description
The stop lamp switch is used to sense the action of the driver application of the brake pedal. In the event that DTC C0277, C0297, or C0890 sets as current in the body control module (BCM) is an indication of a possible internal BCM malfunction or programming error. There are no external circuits available to diagnose on this vehicle with respect to these DTCs.
Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop or the Cadillac dealer.

When the variable signal reaches a voltage threshold indicating the brakes have been applied, the BCM will apply battery positive voltage to the stop lamps, transmission control module (TCM), engine control module (ECM), and stop lamp relay coil side. When the stop lamp relay receives battery voltage from the BCM, the relay coil is energized and the stop lamp relay switch contacts close applying battery voltage through the STOP LP fuse to illuminate the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL).
I'd say you have more then a bad fuse ,just reading how the brake lights function .You should have it hooked up to a professional grade scan tool ,one that can check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes in the BCM - body control module !
  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Brake Pedal Position Sensor parameter in the data list for the body control module (BCM).
  4. Apply and release the brake pedal.
Does the scan tool display a change in the voltage?

The body control module (BCM) applies a ground through the brake sensor reference low circuit to the brake pedal position (BPP) sensor. The BCM supplies a 5-volt reference through the brake sensor reference voltage circuit to the brake position sensor. When the brake pedal is being applied, the BPP sensor then sends a variable voltage signal through the brake sensor signal circuit to the BCM.
Circuit/System Verification
  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Brake Lamp Cmd. parameter as you apply and unapply the brake pedal. The parameter should change between OFF and ON as the brake pedal is applied and released.

    If the parameter does not change as the brake pedal is applied and released, refer to Brake Pedal Position Sensor (BPPS) Malfunction.

  3. With a scan tool, command the LR Stop/Turn Signal Lamp ON and OFF. The LR turn signal should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.

    If the LR stop lamp does not illuminate when commanded, refer to Stop Lamps Malfunction.

Where is the blinker relay in my 2011 Chevy Equinox.


PCB Relays
This vehicle is equipped with the following printed circuit board PCB mounted relays.
• High beam
• Low beam
• DRL
• Fog lamp
• Park lamp
• Stop lamp
• Horn relay
They are directly soldered to the underhood fuseblock circuit board. A failure of one of these relays will require the whole under hood fuse block to be replaced.

Turn Signal/Hazard Lamps
The body control module (BCM) is responsible for controlling the turn signals and hazard lamps. When the turn signal switch is placed in either the left turn or right turn position, the BCM receives a signal from the turn signal switch. The BCM then sends an on-off voltage signal to either the left or right turn signals and their instrument panel cluster (IPC) indicator. When the hazard switch is pressed, the BCM receives a signal from the hazard switch. The BCM then will send an on-off voltage signal to all the turn signal lamps. All the turn signal lamps will flash including both IPC turn signal indicators.

Vehicles are just not the same as they use to be. Electronics !!!!!

Can you help me determine what is going on with my car?


Your headlamp problem sounds like a lose connection , need to check the fit of the terminal pins at the headlight connector ! or you have a wire broke inside the insulation or a bad ground wire ! Are both high an low beams inoperable ?
You other light problems are not that easy to say it's this or that ,not when a control module is involved . When the BCM is involved in controlling these thing's the first thing to do would be hook up a professional grade scan tool an check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes , in the bcm no the engine computer ! An then check inputs to the BCM from brake switch , headlamp , turn signal etc... An outputs from the BCM to the components that are not working ! Here is a description of how it works !

There could be a code stored in the EBCM - electronic brake control module - DTC B3903 Stop Lamp Relay Circuit
DTC C0278 Brake Pedal Position Sensor Not Calibrated
there are several other codes that pertane to the brake lights . you could try Replaceing the bas relay !

Turn signal flasher relay


If your relay switch is working fine and the ground wires are good, I could replace the flasher device (isn't expensire replacement) and test again, if the fault come on again, the multifunction switch is go to bad.
