Battery keeps going dead

I have a 1997 Grand Cheroke Jeep and the battery keeps going dead.
I had a short in the dome light and that was fixed, but if it sets for a few days the battery goes dead. I have had it a two dealers and they cannot find anything wrong with it. With the key out it only has normal draine on it. It has 90,000 miles on it.

When was the last time you replaced the battery? What do you consider normal current drain? What short was detected...what exactly was the problem and what did they do to fix it? I can help with this if you give me as much detail as possible. Automotive electronics are simple circuits but are sometimes a real bear to troubleshoot. I'll stick with you until we fix the problem.

I have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The battery and alternator have recently been replaced, but sometimes my car still won't start. I'll put the battery pack and it and charge it and off it goes with no problem, then a few days later the same problem occurs. The cables have been cleaned. Any thoughts? Thanks

I do not know what it is drawing for parasitic drain but it should only consume about 30-40 milliamperes (mA) of current. If it is draining the battery that fast there must be a problem. If it is equipped with any aftermarket equipment, that is where I would start.

When trying to trouble shoot parasitic drain you need to hook up an ammeter (measures current i.e amps) between your positive terminal of the battery and the positive cable (make sure it is not still connected to the battery). For this you should use a good quality meter that is capable of measuring small amounts or current. All lights and equipment should be turned off and the ignition should be off.

Once that is done your meter should read whatever the parasitic dray is. Watch your meter and begin systematically removing fuses, do this one at a time and make sure to replace them. Once you remove a fuse and the current drops you have isolated the faulty circuit.

Once you have isolated the faulty circuit you can further trouble shoot that circuit by disconnecting specific components that are powered by that circuit.

New battery keeps going dead when car shut off overnight

Sounds like a slow drain - like a dome light or short in the wiring.
If the battery stays charged when it is disconnected, you'll have to check for a power drain in the car.

Please help dome lite will not go off battery goes dead!!! Anyone know how to fix this roblem

Check the plastic dome light switch which is located inside the driver door frame near the front of the vehicle. There should be a plastic buttom which gets depressed when the door goes shut, thus turning off the dome light. Sometimes, these buttons can get broken or damaged for numerous reasons and stick in, hence permanent dome light.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee battery will drain

Ditto here on a 2005 jeep. We bought it new and found the battery dead on a few mornings the first year. Nothing left on. Did the new alternator thing about 2 yrs. ago and a few batteries along the way. This is what we noticed..... If you leave a CD in the CD player, that is the prime little devil that sucks out the juice. Now, we never turn off the car while a CD is in the dash. Now, maybe not necessary every time, but always overnight and now by habit, all the time, we make sure there is no CD inserted when the car is off. Hope this helps.

Electric problem on 2002 Jeep cherokee 6

I had a similar problem, Mine turned out to be a weak cell in the battery. Here is what I did to find it. First, check what postion is the dome light switch in when this problem happens?

Disconect the negitive battery terminal. connect a volt, ohm, amp, meter in series between the negative battery terminal, and the disconected negative battery cable. How much voltage is showing on the meter? open the door does the voltage go up, or does it drop off?
Close the door wait 30, 40 second voltage should start to decrease back down to 0. This is normal the dome light uses a module to control the dome light delay.
If the voltage does not drop down to zero with the door closed after a min. or 2, select the amp setting in your meter, read the amperage draw. This is what drains the battery, the higher the amperage reading the quicker the battery will drain.
With the meter still hooked up remove one fuse at a time, when the amperage drops off you have found the defective circuit.

Blowing dome light and rear wiper fuse.

Sounds like a dead short to me. You will need to find a wiring diagram for this one. Without it, I'd start by unpluging the motor and the light one at a time. Another good place to check is at the rear hatch, where the wiring harness enters the hatch, this is a common area for broken/shorted wires.Check that and let me know, I'll help how I can.
Good luck
