Question about 1984 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, and nothing in drive.

I've got an 84k-20 with a 6.2L diesel. the 700r4 was rebuilt about 12k ago. the truck had a 400turbo originally. last winter it started shifting at times at very high rpms with no shift into OD. this was very spuratic and mostly worked ok. I did a fluid and filter change with no difference. now it only shifts at max rpms, and it just slips in drive. the fluid is not burnt so what could be up. I have readjusted the tv cable and thats when it got worse. is the trans selonoid bad? or should I scrap the whole tranny/

It sounds like a Solenoid problem. It might also be a clutch pack. If you felt like cracking it open to take a look, you might be able to do the rebuild yourself because there are ample parts available, but you might be better off just finding a new used tranny.

That could be a perfect reason to take it back to the shop where it was just repaired for repeat service. Either that or you spun out in the mud.

My trans in 94 z-71 shifts from 1st to 3 and overdrive no 2nd

you have 700r4 and it could be ;1st and 3rd only, no 2,4 or R: Sunshell is fractured or splines are sheared off. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.
hope it helps

My 2001 GMC Jimmy 4x4 Automatic with 84K miles. It winds when I put it in reverse and I think I only have 1st and 2nd gear. Additionally it revs high, like over 3000 rpm, delays and then eventually...

It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

The throttle valve cable controls the transmission pressure. Adjusting this cable is the most important step when installing a 700R4 or 200R4 transmission.

98 5.7 4x4 trans shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and

This is most likely the first signs of transmission failure. There's not much you can do aside from getting it rebuilt. This should be a 700 R4 they're a pretty easy transmission to rebuild, however you want to do it sooner than later. Many of the parts can be re-used IF you don't let it go too long. I've rebuilt hundreds of these and I'm here to tell you that I'd rather not destroy 500-600 dollars worth of hard parts if I don't have to.
