Question about 2000 GMC Yukon XL

The ABS & Brake lights come on intermittently when driving and go out with no action taken. What could cause this?

WELL START AT MAKING SHERE YOU BRAKE FLUIDS ARE UP THEN IF THE LIGHT IS GOING ON AND OFF YOU NEED TO PULL THE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS AND MAKE SH ERE THERE IS NO METAL STUCK ON THEM IT WILL LOOK LIKE HAIR ON THEM OR GO TO PEP BOY OR SOME ONE LIKE THEM AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET THEM TO GIVE YOU CODE FOR FREE OR IT MAY BE AUTO ZONE AND I THINK AAAMCO IS DOING IT FOR FREE HOPE THIS HELPS.

Hi

This happens if the ABS Control Module is out. The hardest part is removing the module which is in a tricky spot under the frame on the driver’s side on Yukon. They are located in different places on different vehicles...some are lucky enough to have it mounted under the hood! You have to use a torx bit socket to remove. Be careful not to strip it out. May be you can just take it to a body shot and negotiated a price to remove it for you. I can't imagine they would charge more than $50 to do so. Getting it back on would be much easier for some reason. If this is the issue then it will cost you around $170 which will include the rebuild and the return shipping.

This has been a common problem on GMC. If you don’t want to try yourself first then you need to have the ABS system scanned and that will point to the area of fault. It will take a well equipped shop with body scan capability or the dealer. Be aware there are several bulletins out on the ABS system on that vehicle. If you don’t want your vehicle to go through body scan then you check for a bad ground wire, there is a bulletin about your truck on a bad ground wire, but it's a little premature to start looking at that until we have the code.
The dealer might charge you $1000 - $1500 to fix what you can Do it yourself if you have the expertise for under $200!

Could it be a broken abs speed sensor wire to one of the wheels . 2009 Dodge Caliber - The ABS & Brake Light came on as well as the feeling/sensation of the brake being applied very hard for a split second.


take it to an accredited brake specialist shop
I suspect that the brake booster is becoming defective and the small application to the pedal causes excessive booster reaction
the abs section only maintains applied brake fluid pressure as set by the position of the pedal
that is to maintain the pressure as the stopping and start movement of a skidding wheel opens and closes a valve to that wheel /s
if you are on ice that sudden hard braking will cause the wheels to lock and immediately the abs cuts in to allow the wheels to turn and then to allow brake action to be reapplied
if the abs is working under brakes you will get a pulsating feeling under your foot as the fluid pressure is alternation between full on and released by the abs valves

Pulse or vibration in brake pedeal abs light goes on then off then service traction control comes on then off


I would think if your brakes have not been taken apart
in a year, then brake work or at least rust removal & lube
is where I would start

After that, you diagnose the ABS System, as you have a
dash light on & a system fault present

There is no guessing or giving you a list of possible
parts to throw at any vehicle problem

It requires testing to determine all issues,causes &
a solution.

Brake work needed,maybe machine rotors,new pads,
maybe nothing,then possibly a fail Wheel Speed Sensor

Do not keep driving it ,get it resolved

looks like you need an ebcm. You can check the ground under the drivers side door attached to the frame, make sure it is clean and tight.



DTC C0241-C0254 or C041-C054
Circuit DescriptionThe ABS relay supplies battery voltage to 6 valve solenoids. The electronic brake control module (EBCM) microprocessor applies the grounds needed to activate each solenoid. The low side of each solenoid coil has a feedback circuit to the EBCM microprocessor. When a solenoid is commanded OFF, the feedback voltage is high. When a solenoid is commanded ON, the feedback voltage is low.
Conditions for Running the DTC • The ignition is ON. • The vehicle speed is greater than 6 km/h (4 mph). Conditions for Setting the DTCThe EBCM detects an internal malfunction.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets C0241, C0242, C0245, C0246, C0251, C0252, C0253, C0254If equipped, the following actions occur:
• The EBCM disables the DRP/ABS. • The ABS indicator turns ON. • The red brake warning indicator turns ON. C0243, C0244, C0247, C0248If equipped, the following actions occur:
• The EBCM disables the ABS. • The ABS indicator turns ON. Conditions for Clearing the DTCThe conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present and you use the scan tool Clear DTCs function.
Diagnostic AidsAn intermittent open/shorted solenoid DTC can be set by several different internal EBCM problems. Replace the EBCM if an open/shorted solenoid DTC continues to set intermittently.

This is most likely one of 2 things 1 the abs sensor on one wheel is faulty, not uncommon cost about $80 for a new one. or you can clean the old one as often they get dirty from brake dust.

secondly the brake pads may need replacing, the ABS warning light is to let you know that these may need replacing, often when it is the brakes they will fel different as you press it down, sometimes they push back up towards you as your pushing down. I would have the back brakes checked as that is normally the cause.

you can still drive the car no problem.

If you have abs sensors at the wheels, have them checked. Usually abs & trac control work off these sensors

yes it's most likely a alternator problem,usually the internal diode bridge breaks causing all lights you mentioned to come on,if this happens at a idle open the hood and remove green connector on alt.if lights go out you've found the problem

Check engine light on; ABS/Parking Brake light on - 02' Protege 5


If you live in the US, you can take your car to an Auto Zone store and they will read off the diagnostic code that is causing the check engine lamp to come on. Once you have that then you can decide your next course of action.
