Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500
I have a 1997 chevy truck w/ the 5.7 liter engine. The Truck starts very hard and idles rough sometimes. Not all of the time though. I have already replaced the distributor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, and air filter. Could this problem possibly be caused by a fuel pump going bad?
Certainly possible.Key on /engine off cycles the pump for 3 secs.In a quiet place like an enclosed garage you can hear these pumps running and at this stage it might sound abnormal, louder and squeel-ish in a sense. Then can be verified by taking fuel pressure readings with a test gauge...good luck

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
