I just bought a used 1998 pontiac and 3 things 1) I have to giggle my key to start it sometimes up to 10 times to get it , this is a pain, is this hard to fix or replace? 2) is there such a thing as a FREE carfax report? 3) where do I get a owners manual for this car? btw, Why does everyone keep telling me I bought a piece of junk , they say ''Just look on the internet''? I've only had it 2 days and I'm getting all these negative comments. D

Maybe I didn't describe my key in the ignition problem correctly. I put the key in , and the steering wheel locks (which is normal) but after trying once, twice,
three, sometimes 10 times the steering wheel will
NOT unlock right away and the key won't go forward
or backward for sometimes 10 tries. The guy I bought
it off of sprayed WD 40 on it. that didn't help.
My question is can it be fixed or what needs or can
be replaced? sorry My first question was not
    described properly.

I had a 97 Cavalier, which is mechanically the same car, and it was a very reliable car. The column unfortunately is a bit of a tough job since the bolts that hold it up or coming in from the top. So you have to take part of the dash off or the speedo cluster. I never tried to change out the ignition but I would try that before getting into anything like this. And you can get an owners manual at a junkyard or you can go to a parts store and get a Chilton or Haynes book on your model/year. These have everything an original manual have and then some. I don't know anything about a Carfax report. Hope this helps

Security light want go off so car can start 98

Check the key and make sure its is the correct one, pass lock is a pain, and sometimes the reader\transponder can go south. I would bypass it and go around the problem this can be done with a resistor.

Due to part availability, this recall is being conducted in three phases. Phase 1 will consist of 1998-1999 vehicles, phase 2 will consist of 2000 vehicles; and phase 3 will consist of 2001 vehicles. When sufficient parts are available to notify customers of 2000 and 2001 vehicles, you will be notified and will receive a new initiation report.

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1998 model year Buick Skylark; 1998-2001 model year Chevrolet Cavalier; 1998 model year Oldsmobile Achieva; 1998 model year Pontiac Grand Am; and 1998-2001 model year Pontiac Sunfire vehicles. If the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. The fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants of the car or cause damage to adjoining structures.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand AM and because of the security system it wont start, what do I do ?

most likely your key got erased from memory make sure you are using a chip key, in a 3 times 30 minutes put your key on (without starting the engine) and live it on for 10 minutes, shut it of and back on the same way for another 10 minutes,do it again 10 minutes more at the end shut it off wait 30 seconds and start the car,if it is not a brand new key it may take 1 or 2 times this sequence to get it to start. let me know

2001 Dodge Dakota Ignition Problem or Battery?

i would recommend replacing the terminals. but before doing that tighten the ones that are on there as much as possible. if that doe not solve it then replace the terminals and make sure it is tight on the battery. if thats not it, then make sure the battery is the correct one for the car. and the deal with the key could possibly the tumbler, or it could be that the steering wheel is locked and needs to be shimmied back and forth to start it. if this does not help please repost.

Security light comes on and car wont start

I've owned 3 GA's, and have run into this problem once before. There's a problem in the security system. You DONT have to get it fixed right away, you will just have to give yourself an extra 30 minutes each time you want to take your car somewhere.
STEP 1- Insert your key into the ignition.
STEP 2- Turn the key to the "RUN" position (not all the way to the start position!)
STEP 3- Go have a smoke. Wait 10 minutes with the key in the "RUN" position.
STEP 4- Turn the key to the "OFF" position for 10 minutes.
STEP 5- Turn the key to the "RUN" position again for another 10 minutes.
STEP 6- Turn the key to the "OFF" position again, the immediately try to start the engine. It has never failed me.
I know it's a pain in your ***, but it will save you a costly repair when money's tight. Any questions about this, you can call a mecanic at the Pontiac GM dealer and he will probably tell you what I just tried to explain.

Theft system

You have to take the key out for five -10 seconds after you wait ten mins in the on position. The reset does not take effect until you remove the key.
