Need to change air and fuel filters,not sure where they are ?


The air filter is in a rectangular box under the hood. It will have either 4 screws or several metal clamps that you just pop off. The fuel filter is in front of the right or left rear wheel attached to the frame. In 86 you will need a 5/8" and a 9/16" line wrench to loosen the two connections.

Fuel Pump - Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Quick-connect fittings at the fuel pump Fuel pump locking nut with a Fuel Pump Spanner Wrench J 39348 Fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank and discard the O-ring
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    New O-ring on the fuel tank Fuel pump into the fuel tank making certain not to fold or twist the strainer and that it does not interfere with the full travel of the float arm Fuel pump locking nut with the scanner tool Quick-connect fittings at the fuel pump Fuel tank and fill the tank Negative battery cable
  2. Prime the fuel system as follows:
    1. Turn the ignition switch ON for two seconds.
    2. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn the ignition switch ON and checks for leaks. Repair if necessary.


Fuel Pump/SenderRemoval & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Drain the fuel tank into an approved container.
    WARNING Do not attempt to straighten any kinked nylon fuel lines. Replace any kinked nylon fuel feed or return pipes in order to prevent damage to the vehicle.
    WARNING Do not attempt to repair sections of nylon fuel pipes. If the nylon fuel pipes are damaged, replace the pipes.
  5. Raise the vehicle.

  6. Disconnect the fuel supply pipe (5) quick-connect fitting.
  7. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge pipe (6) quick connect fitting at the EVAP canister.
  8. Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe hose clamp.
  9. Disconnect the fuel tank filler from the fuel tank.
  10. Disconnect the vapor recirculation pipe from the filler tube.
  11. Remove the fuel tank shield.
  12. With the aid of an assistant, support the fuel tank.
  13. Remove the fuel tank strap attaching bolts.
  14. Disconnect the fuel sender and the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor electrical connectors at the body pass through.
  15. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  16. Remove the fuel sender assembly (3).

  17. Disconnect the fuel sender electrical connections (3).
  18. Clean all of the fuel pipe connections, all of the hose connections, and all of the areas surrounding the connections before disconnecting the connections in order to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system.
  19. Disconnect the fuel supply pipe quick-connect fitting (4) at the fuel sender assembly.
  20. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) pipe quick-connect fittings (5, 6) at the fuel sender assembly.
    CAUTION Do NOT use impact tools. Significant force will be required to release the lock ring. The use of a hammer and screwdriver is not recommended. Secure the fuel tank in order to prevent fuel tank rotation.

Mustang stalls when trying to drive and will shut down


Measure fuel pressure on injector rail - should be 38 to 40 psi. If low or fluctuating, then replace regulator. Another possibility is the in-tank filter being clogged - rare I know, but trash in the gas tank and it's clogged.

HI ute just stoped fuel ok but not pumping put fuel down carby started 5 sec then stoped checked fueses ok. not sure where pump is. removed fuel fillter nothing any help would be great thanks tony.


fuel pump located on the frame in front of the fuel tank, just follow the metal fuel line back to tank. there just little electro magnets and a rubber diaphragm they do wear out. but for a short term fix. and to diagnose a few taps with a wrench may get it to rattle back to life for a short while

How do you remove & replace the rubber hoses that run from the gas tank to the metal fuel lines? The hose goes between the frame and body of the car I can not pull or push them out, so how are you...


Step 1-Determine type of fuel line to be replaced. Rubber hoses will have clamps on both ends that should be loosened with screw driver. Nylon and steel lines will have a ferrule at both ends removed and replaced using proper size line wrench

Step 2-Using proper size line wrench or screwdriver, loosen fittings by turning counter clockwise. Catch fuel remaining in lines in a gasoline safe container.

Step 3-Remove defective fuel line and install the new line or hose opposite of removing. Take care not to strip or cross-thread fittings as this will cause leaks.

Step 4-Dispose of remaining fuel in an OSHA safe container.

Fuel filter


unbolt the filter from the bracket, that is a 5/16" machine screw head size, then remove the nylon clips that hold the lines onto the filter, hold a rag over the fuel line when u remove it, it will have about 30 pounds of pressure.

Is the fuel pump located in the tank itself on a 2001 sporttrack or is it mounted on the frame


The fuel pump is in the tank, the filter is on the frame rail, you must pull the tank to change the pump, also remember to always change the fuel filter with the pump, this is because metal and other harmful particles are most likely in the filter, these cause a restriction that can damage the new pump. I would suggest rock auto.com for the vbest price on a new pump assy. Thanks, hope this helps See repair below

THE REPAIR
I did the repairs at work using a lift and air tools. After I finished, I realized I could have done it in my garage using a good 3 ton or higher floor jack and 5 ton {min} jack stands. The air tools made the job easier; but, are not necessary. The job from start to finish took about 2 hours.
Run as much gas out of the vehicle as possible. the emptier the better.
Disconnect the negative battery post for safety's sake.
Loosen the lug nuts on the driver's rear wheel {for later removal}
Jack the vehicle up in the rear from both sides as high as safely possible.
Place extended floor jacks under frame rails. {use common sense safety}
With vehicle safely raised, test stability buy jolting rear bumper {be reasonable} better the vehicle falls now rather than when you are under it.
Remove driver's rear wheel to access fuel filler and fuel hoses.
Disconnect the two big fuel filler lines from the rear of the tank. Ford uses a plastic pinch clamp and rubber O rings. Its might take alittle effort to squeeze the pinch clamps, but don't worry, you'll get it. Wrap a rag around the clamps to get a better grip. Try not to use channel lock pliers, they will break the plastic clamps. Squeeze and wiggle the hose until it slides off the fuel tank.
Remove the safety clips on the two fuel lines at the pump. Using the special ford tool, slide the tool under the fuel pump hose clamp and pull both clamps off pump housing. They can be a little pain in the ****, but after you move them around and work with them, they will slide off. Be patient.
Place the floor jack under the fuel tank, putting the wood between them.
Remove the fuel tank strap bolts at the rear of the tank note the position of the rubber bushings and metal washers.
Remove the side fuel tank strap bolts on the side of the tank. DON'T LET THE FUEL TANK DROP AT THIS POINT. THE NEOPRENE VENT HOSE ON TOP OF THE TANK IS STILL CONNECTED. SLOWLY LOWER THE TANK TO ACCESS THE BREATHER VENT HOSE AT THE TOP OF THE TANK.
Just like the fuel filler neck hose, squeeze the pinch clamp on the vent hose and remove it...slowly. these clamps will break if abused.
Double check all hoses are cleared. cover the ends of the hoses to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system. { I used plastic warp from the kitchen}
Disconnect the electrical plug for the fuel pump located on the driver's side rear frame rail. It is secured in place by a tie-wrap locator clamp.
Lower the tank and clear it away from the vehicle. TAKE A BREAK...
Note the position of the pump housing in reference to the tank. the hose lines on the pump plate point off to the side a little.
Remove the 10 or so retaining bolts which hold the pump/sender in place.
Gently lift the assembly out of the tank, as not to bend the float arm or tear the nylon pump screen off and having it fall in the tank.
There is nothing to take apart, Ford sells the pump and float as an assembly. Parts are available after market; But, This is a job you want to avoid doing twice in the same year if possible. I recommend using the Ford factory parts. You get what you pay for.....
ASSEMBLING NOTES Use electric contact grease on the fuel pump plug if available. It is a weather pack seal; but, the grease keeps condensation from forming on the inside of the connector.
Use a little silicone spray on the fuel filler and breather hose O ring seal before connecting back on the tank. It helps them slide on better. You'll hear the clamps click when they are seated correctly.
Fill the tank with enough fuel to get vehicle running. Check for any leaks or fuel odors. If ok...head for the gas station.
Connect the battery. Be sure the ignition is off to decrease the spark at the battery post.
Start the vehicle and allow the Engine Control Unit to adapt. When the power is dis-connected, the engine control unit has to learn the running values again. Don't worry, it only takes a minute or two. The ride to the gas station is more than enough.
The best part of this repair is you probably saved yourself about 2 to 3 hundred dollars. Hope I didn't confuse anyone.....
