Sounds like a bad gas meter unit in the gas tank if not working. I dont know toyota the tanks but my jeep the thing that read the level is hooked to the pump. Looks like metal arms with plastic arm that floats to tell the level in the gas tank

My 65 mustang fuel gauge reads past full all the time. the tank and sending unit and gauge are new I removed the sending unit wire and its still goes past full. How can do to correct this problem.

power goes through the gauge down to the sender unit ,through the resistance to ground
what you have indicates a short in the wire after the gauge and before the sender unit

Fuel warning light on

its 1 of 2 things.
1: the fuel is low, use a dip stick, if gauge reads ok.
2; or the tank sender is bad, but gauge reads wrong.
3: the guage wire is disconnected, cut or corroded connections.

Warning light for low fuel stays on

The sensor is part of the fuel pump module inside the gas tank.
The signal is sent to the body computer, so it could be a faulty module or a problem with the body computer.
The circuit would need to be checked with a meter.

Fuel waring light stay on. Tank is full. what is the problem

Fuel gauge working correctly?? Sometimes these low fuel lights are triggered by the fuel guage, which is triggered by a float that is in the tank.

Seems to me the indicator/sensor/relay, which is probably located in the fuel tank.... shorted out. I know this sounds strange, but rock the back of the car as if you were checking the shocks/struts, when the car has a 1/4 tank or lower.

Fuel gauge keeps going to empty and warning light

in side the tank on the side of the pump there is what thy call a sender not to be confused with the sending unit. The sender is atached to the float and tells the gauge how much fuel you have.

What would cause the low fuel warning light to come on? The fuel gauge shows full and tank is full.

The float in the tank may be bad or stuck. The sending unit could also be bad. Either way, you're gonna have to pull the fuel pump out of the tank.

Fuel gauge is not reading

to the right , i am assuming to the "full tank" reading. am i right?

if i am right, the wire from the gas tank is sending a full tank signal what ever the content of the tank.

meaning the wire is shorted to ground.
or the sending unit is faulty. there is a short to ground reading between the sending unit.

you can test which one is faulty. remove the wire from the sending unit. observe the gauge. if the gauge would go to " empty" then the culprit is the sending unit. if it stays on " full tank", then the wire is faulty.

WARNING: GASOLINE IS EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. BE VERY CAREFUL IN HANDLING NEAR THEM.
