Question about 1995 Isuzu Rodeo
Hi, I have a 1995 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2L SOHC there is a loud tapping sound coming from the passenger side of the upper half of the engine. The sound increases in speed with increasing the RPM's however once it reaches approx 4000-4200 the sound completely goes away. this happens with or without a load on the engine or in other words while driving and in park. Have any ideas?
You probably are hearing a lose rocker arm as result of a lifter failing to pump up.The high rpms increase pump pressure and speed which helps it pump up and reduce the clearance. Before replacing this lifter(s) ,you might try an oil additive which has been known to revive a bled down lash adjusters or lifters.I've actually seen this stuff work as you pour it in. There are several on the market and everybody has a favorite, but the best I ever saw was a product called" lifter quiet" and it was a loose, watery dark graphite fluid that found its way into those lifters very fast. I would run a low viscosity oil no thicker than 5w30 and possibly 5w20 as this thin oil helps pump up lifters. With this additive and thin oil,run this vehicle under load and the higher rpms you were mentioning. If your lucky,it might help pump up and keep this lifter pumped up. Otherwise if you are faced with replacing, install the new lifter primed(pre-pumped) as even new lifters can be difficult to pump up.
