I had a 06 Chevy which did not have power steering pump it had a electric motor assist. I know many cars have gone to electric motor assist on the steering. One more thing I had a problem once with my cobalt and it turned out to be an electrical problem. When voltage get low while running car will start saving voltage by turning off unnecessary things to keep the car running. The last day I lost power steering, radio and the next day the battery was dead. I changed the battery and the alternator was good and never had the problem again. I am just suggesting you check battery voltage and alternator output.

as the pump just supplies pressure the fault would be in both directions--so eliminate the pump
It could be the valve body in the steering box or failing hoses from the box
I suggest that a diagnosis by an accredited steering specialist may save lots of money
The wheels pivot around the ball joints when you steer. The tie rod links the front wheels across the car to ensure the correct steering geometry. If the car wanders and wayward in the corners this is because the ball joints and the cross linking tie bar are defective. Have the parts replaced as suggested and have the car alignment checked. Maybe take it to a third party garage if you have little confidence in the suggestions made by your last garage.
power steering pump probably went out.. if you can easily get at the belt and are any kind of mechanically inclined, remove the drive belt to the p/s pump and then start the car if the noise is gone then its probably part of the power steering pump
It's understood that the 2004 RX-8 came standard with Electric power steering. There's a computer module for the electric steering assist too, which sounds like it has it's own diagnostic port. On your own, I'd suggest looking for blown fuses.. beyond that it appears that any diagnosing and fixing is up to your local/preferred stealership.
