Question about 2000 Volvo S40

1 Answer

2000 volvo S40. Changed timing belt, engine will not start.

2000 volvo S40. I have changed the timing belt and put a lock on the cam gears so it could not go out of time. After putting it all back together it will not start but turns over good. What might be preventing the engine form starting? Also I was going to Just push it out of the garage but it will not shift out of Park. What could be the problem?

My daughter just got a 2000 volvo s40. It has a 115,000 miles and the timing belt has never been changed. And, the transmission fluid is brown. Should we be concerned?

Yes, and no. The timing belt MUST BE CHANGED. It should have been changed at around 60,000miles Bad, bad things can happen if it breaks while its running. As for the tranny fluid, it has probably never been changed either so it's probably 11 years old. Just have that changed as well. Otherwise, very nice car. Good luck with it.

Does the volvo 2000 s40 have a timeing belt or timeing chain?

The 1.9 Liter has a cam belt which MUST be replaced at 105,000 miles. Also replace the water pump which is driven by the cam belt to save labor costs later one. This is an INTERFERENCE engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Therefore do not neglect this service.

Why would a newly replaced timing belt "shred" within 3 months on a 2000 volvo s40 1.9 liter turbo? There were no problems up to the car just comming to a stop during a drive. The timing belt, tensioner...

They could have been incorrectly fitted not to factory spec so they disintegrated this may be due to you went with cheapest place possible.

Timing marks set to get car back in timing so it can start

take out number one sparkplug, take the cam cover off. turn the engine of with a spanner on the bottom pulley. make sure number one piston is at TDC, now check to see if the inlet&outlet valves are close. and the piston is all the way at the top, do this with a long screwdriver to make sure it is.
if everything ok, then it will be a ignition problem.
