Get a pickle fork. if you dont have one, you can rent one from Schucks or another auto parts store pretty cheap.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am loud popping noise from front end drivers?

Hey there Chris.

Without actually being there to hear it for myself, I'm going to 'spitball guess' and say it's a good possibility a CV joint is, or has gone bad.

The drive, or CV axles have rubber accordion looking boots on each end of the shaft. One out by the wheel (likely suspect) and one by the the transmission (transaxle).

If the boot gets ripped or damaged it will allow the grease from inside to escape and dirt and water to get inside. Thus ruining the CV joint.

I'm NOT saying for sure this is the problem.

You can check if the boots are damaged or if it looks like grease it splattered from the boot. If it is, at the very least the boot and joint will need replaced.

Actually it's probably going to be less expensive and easier to replace the entire CV shaft rather than installing a single joint and boot.

The 'popping' sound from a CV joint USUALLY shows up when accelerating while the front wheels are turned. That's not always the case, but is pretty common.

The other possibility is the 'popping' is a lower ball joint or a bad upper strut mount.

If the 'pop' happens when hitting a bump then those would be more suspect than the CV joint.

IF that's the case then you may be able to simply bounce that corner of the car to try to make the 'pop' happen while sitting still.

If you can do that then you should be able to detect where the sound is coming from.

Hopes this helps.

How can you tell if the cv joint is gone

Usually there will be a loud clicking when you turn the wheel from the side that the CV is worn. Lift the car up and you will see the drive axle going to the transmission and the other end going into the hub on the wheel, In between is a rubber boot, inside the boot is the constant velocity joint (CV) Hold the axle on either side of the boot and see if you can feel any play in the joint when you move it around. If you can the CV needs replacing. Good luck.

Just installed new rotors, brake pads, bearings and tie rods to front of 2000 montana. have a whopping sound when driving , this goes away when wheels turned slightly right. when turning right corner hear a...

One of your CV joints are bad, inspect which CV joint needs to be replaced. Roll your windows down and make tight right and left corners in an empty parking lot slowly and listen for the clicking noise. If it's coming from the passenger side window or the drivers side window, which ever side the noise is coming from is the side that the CV joint has failed and will need to be replaced.
Thank you for using FIxya and replacing the front wheel bearing improperly buy hammering the CV joint out instead of using a wheel bearing puller will cause damage to the CV joint as to what you have described. Good luck and keep us posted.

How to know if a universal joint is going bad on a 2000 Grand Prix?

You have cv joints, they are in the cv axle on each side of the car,two axles, there are two in each axle,if you turn the car sharp either way,you can hear the click click ,click in witch ever side it is on,that will be the axle that needs to be replaced, the axle for this car at napa auto parts is only about 53.00 exchange.

CV halfshaft will run you $75 at local autoparts store. Shop labor varies from shop to shop as well as their expertise.
The brake caliper has to be pulled, lower shock bolt removed, upper and lower ball joint seperated (book will say only one but it is not true) and steering knuckle and axle nut removed. CV joint simply unbolts at differential output flange.

My driver side cv joint inner boot keeps breaking

Are you replacing the cv axle yourself. If you are going with an aftermarket axle, that may be your problem. I would recommend going back to O.E. Also, some original saturn parts may be hard to find.

Trouble removing cv axle from 1999 pontiac grand prix

you will need to take the two bolts out of the strut that connects to the spindle backing plate.this will let the backing plate pull out enough to pull the cv axle out.
