1996 Chevy Cavalier, need help to seal new water pump

I replaced the water pump on it, filled it back up and started it, all the fluid ran out around the water pump. I am about to take it back off. What is the best way to make sure the seal is good this time? It is a 2.2L engine

Make sure that any and all previous gasket material is completely removed. gaskets and O rings can be pre-positioned using a small amount of silicone glue on them and allowing it to partially set. When putting pump on use a couple of longer bolts to position the pump so it does not slide around out of position as you put it on. As soon as you get at least two bolts in on opposite sides, you can remove the long ones. never fully tighten anything 'till all bolts are in their holes and turned in a t least a couple of threads.

replace the gasket on the pan, while you have the pan down it wouldn't be a bad idea to put a new filter in, just be sure to use the specified trans fluid when you fill back up and to get the specs for how much correct

Bad water pump. The seals are more than likely shot. Usually at higher rpm the temp goes down and at idle it would overheat. Had a friend with the same problem.

1996 chevy Cavalier, where is the transmission located? It seems to be leaking transmission fluid

Your transmission is bolted to the back of the engine. (it's big). What you need to do is actually look underneath and find the source of the leak (could be a cooling line or a seal) If it's a line you can replace it. If it's a seal, that's more complicated but you could try lucas transmission conditioner to stop the leak or slow it down. (conditioner is added through the dipstick tube...if you can't find it you man not have one...then you will need someone to show you where the fill plug is).

Assuming you have everything reinstalled correctly and the fuel pump was your problem to start with, try disconnecting the battery for at least 15 minutes to reset the computer. This worked on my 1996 Blazer.

How do you get to the water pump in a 1999 chevy cavalier

Make sure you don't have delco loc 2 or theftloc audio system before disconnecting the battery. You should be able to do this by contacting your local dealer and they run the vin and tell you.

Before you put in the new pump you need to put grease on the splines.

battery disconnected

drain coolant

take out the electric fan

take off the serpintine belt

use a large screwdrive or equivlent to hold the pump pulley and loosen all of the bolts holding the pulley on the pump.

After all are loosened then remove from the pulley and remove the pulley.

Take out the four bolts holding the pump to the engine block.

get a wood dowl or equilent and a hammer and give the old pump a few taps to break away the old seal.

Once the seals broke loose take the old pump out.

then clean up the block,

clean everything with brake parts cleaner

put RTV sealant on both sides of the new gasket and put it on the new pump.

try not to let the gasket move around so the bead isnt messed up to bad.

put the pump in and put all four bolts in finger tight

Torque on pump mounting bolts is 18 ft/lbs

Torque on pulley bolts is 18 ft/ lbs

then the rest is just reverse of removal

your car does not have a timing belt it has a chain. but yes if the pump is driven by timing belt and it starts leaking the coolant gets on belt and it will fail. if your car has the 2.4 engine the water pump runs off of the timing chain and depending on mileage it would be smart to go ahead and replace it since it will be tore down anyway will save on labor

I am a mechanic in a shop in my area and replacing a water pump on your car would not cost that much money. I checked the prices of a water pump and thermostat and I would not charge more than $250 for the job. I pays 1.5 hours labor to replace the pump. I hope this is helpful.
