Question about 1986 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

I can't shut off my windshield wiper motor once it is on. I thought the switch was bad so I put in another switch. Before I put in the switch I took my test light and check the plug going to the bottom of the motor. I had power in every position even in the off position on the switch. I don't think this is correct because if I have power in the off position how is the motor going to shut off. My question is am I suppose to have power in the off position on the wires harness going to the motor? (2) If I am suppose to have power on that position how does the motor shut down? (3)If you are not suppose to have power there tell me how to fix it or how to find the problem. Is the problem in the motor or the switch is bad and not stopping the power from passing? CptTrevor

You did not answer my questions about the power in the switch in the off position am I suppose to have power in the wiring when the switch is in the off position yes or no? In your response you told me about the board on the motor going bad. But I want to know if I am suppose to have power in the off position going to the board.

I just went outside to the car and I check both ways I first check the bottom plug with the ignition turn on and the plug unplug I check the wires the middle yellow wire had power, the tan wire no power ,and the blue with yellow stripe no power. I plug it in the middle wire had 12 volts and the tan wire very faint power and the blue with yellow stripe had faint power on high speed and the light was pulsating. When I play with the switch and stop it before it get to the exact bottom turn off position the tan wire gets full 12 volts and the wipers stop. Now let us go to the top of the motor where there is another plug with three wires Green, Red and Black with purple stripe. The green and red wires are hot all the time and the black with purple stripe has no power. Like I said before I change the switch because I thought the switch bad but I have the same problem. Help this car is going to Florida next week and I would like to have this problem fix before it leaves . I am also a mechanic but this one have me.This is my own car and my friend is taking to my house in Florida for me so you see why I have to fix this problem Thank you for all your help and patience CptTrevor

Don't be sorry If that is the problem so be it I just don't want to be just replacing part after part on a hit and miss basis. It appears that the circuit board is very important in the correct operation of this motor?Does it complete the circuit for the system? Do you have a picture schematic to show the proper replacement of this motor and how to properly reset the park positions if that is necessary? If you do please forward to me thank you CptTrevor.

It is always wonderful to learn something new i always tell my children that everyone can always learn from someone else. I appreciated the help and I hope that by tomorrow I should fix the problem with the installation of a new motor. I hope you are right. Your diagnosis is sound and solid and I have done the first step and this should be it. Change the motor. Thank you CptTrevor

Your wiper motor has a built in circuit board on top off the wiper .These boards short out causing your wipers to stay., on replacing the wiper motor will fix this issue .

Were you checking the plug while it was still attached to the motor? And sorry about that yes you should have power to set the motor in the park position. When the key is on there is always power on the one wire to hold in the park position. There should not be power on all wires if the plug in unplugged. But if your checking the wires while the plug is connected to the motor then the circuit board is shorted out .

There is only 2 things that it can be and you already did the first thing that should have been checked That leaves the motor assembly :)

The circuit board is like a mini computer with transistors And micro chips once installed the wiper will park by it self .

Is there a reset switch on the windshield wipers on a Saturn 1998

Most manufacturers do not put reset switches on windshield wiper motors if they stopped working suspect a blown fuse or frozen wiper linkage, or bad motor. Also possible the linkage fell apart.

First I would look in the fuse box by the driver side and check the fuse,if good then get a meter and see if power is going to wiper motor,if so,then wiper motor is bad,if no power is going to motor, then bad switch, here's a link to see.
