Question about Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

A couple of days ago,97 Nissan maxima was shutting off when I would move it from park to reverse. Now it is jerking when I went to slow down and park. And again when i started the car back up it was fine but when I reversed it started jerking again until I started driving forward at a faster speed.

Check your air snorkel tube going to the throttle body .They have a tendency to get a split in the hose if this happens then the mass air flow sensor will not read all the filtered air properly and then stall or run bad .The reason it is doing this just in reverse is when you put the car in reverse the engine rocks forward a little bit and that would open up the split in the hose going to the throttle body.In drive the engine rocks backwards a little this would close the split so no unwanted air would get in. So bottom line check the hose going to the throttle body for a split. :)

hot /cold engine, fast /slow/ accelerating/ decelerating, up hills and what gears.

if engine is hot, is your idle at 800 RPM parked, in park.

if not the idle controls are out of control and when you shift to drive

IT will jerk. this is an engine problem.

there are lots of other symptoms.

No Reverse and the fluid is dirty and smells funny.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

2004 maxima - transmission stuck w/engine shut off

It sounds like a tork conveter lockup switch, have the transmisson serviced oil and filter changed then and add Lucas transmisson treatment to help smooth out hte shifting pattern and stop the problem if there was drag on the clutches it may have stalled out.

It sounds like the the thermostat that was replaced is probably faulty. This being the cheapest and easiest to do I would start there. I can't reply about the air pockets. I have never heard of that before.

Posible throttle assembly/throttle actuator failure. This car has an electronic throttle, not cable operated. We have seen some issues with those and the car will do exactly what you are descibing. Revs up to about 2500 and goes only 10mph. Just a tip.
