Air conditioning problems-96 Bonneville

A friend of mine who owns 2 pontiacs himself, attempted to charge my AC, but it wouldn't take it (the can never got real cold). I know I have a leak somewhere b/c i was just charged last summer. And he said that my clutch was going, as evidenced by hearing metal on metal as the engine and AC were on. He said it would probably cost about $1200.00 to fix, which is not worth it to me. I do need wheels, but the heat and humidity I can't take at 51. Should I be looking for another car?

Don't know why it should cost that much...new compressor is around $400, but there are lots of decent ones in scrapyards. If the problem is in the clutch mechanism and not inside the compressor, the remainder of the system is most likely OK Unless leak is in the system, not the compressor seal. That, could get more expensive. Doing the work at home is cheaper but the unit will need to be "blown down" and recharged at a competent shop. If the leak is in the evaporator (under dash) repair is difficult at home and is costly at any shop. If the metal to metal noise is from the inside of the compressor then the entire system has likely been contaminated or at least the orifice screen...Have your friend give you the specifics on what needs to be done and what the cost per item is ...then you can make a better more informed decision. (owning a vehicle does not make one an expert, unless he already has a/c training and is/was in the business) Likely, using mostly scrapyard parts, the cost would be far less than $1200 even considering the recharge cost., The biggest problem would be evaporator only because it's a real pain to service.
Good Luck (I'm near your age and don't like hot either!!!)

WoW $1,200.00 NOT True, The A/C Compressor NEW is Maybe $250.00 TOPS and Labor Calls for About 2 1/2 Hours. So Parts adn Labor Both Should'nt Be More than $400.00 .
If There are No Objections to USED Part You Can Get the Compressor for around $50.00 - $100.00
As For the Labor Unless you DIY Thats an Expence you cant Avoid. I Replaced the SAME Part on the SAME EXACT year Make & Model a Month Ago and it took me An Hour that Includes Recharging it. I Truely Hope this HELPS!!

Take your positve and negative wires off of the starter and replace it the same way you took it off make before you start working on it that your cables are disconnected from your battery.

I have a 1995 pontiac Bonneville compressor is locked up and broke the serpentine belt need to fix please help thanks Ron

Most cars have an option to buy a belt for a car with or without Air Conditioning. I would check first if your car offers that option (then if you don't need AC you can just buy the other belt and not have to fix the compressor). If you need AC you will have to buy a new compressor (local junkyard is your cheapest bet). I would have a mechanic install either the new belt (to make sure no other pulleys were bent when the belt snapped) or the compressor (some AC lines can be difficult or dangerous to repair or replace). Good Luck!

try the relay, I have problems with my bonneville taking too much power for the blower and the relay melts. You can pick them up for 16-20 dollars. this also causes my air not to come out.
