Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3 Answers

My jeep cuts out and sometimes dies while driving down the road. It doesn't do it all the time just occasionally but it seems to be getting more frequent. It acts like its not getting gas. The fuel filter has been replaced. And Several Mechanics have looked but not been able to find the problem. Of course it doesn't do it while at the shop. Help. Ginny P.

Sorry for the delay in response. At first, when it began cutting out, you could pump the gas pedal and it would keep going. Or if it died while rolling, you could slip it into neutral turn the key and start it right back up while still rolling. However, in the past few rainy days it has completely stopped and not restarted for a while. Last week it stopped for about 20 minutes then started and ran for a mile or so and stopped again. (During a heavy rain storm) I am not saying it only acts up in the rain but seems to be worse then. We live in Southeast Texas and it is very humid here most of the time so if this happens to be moisture related, we can have 90% humidity with the sun shining.

Also, in response to your other questions, I can't say it happens at any particular time of day, but it is always well after the engine is warmed up. I guess you could say it happens more frequently on half tank or less (This is my teenage daughter's car so it seldom has a full tank).

I am not sure of the previous testing. We bought the car from my brotherinlaw and he has had it in the shop several times. I'll ask him. When we took it to the shop last week, It wasn't doing it so they told us they couldn't find anything wrong. When we take it back I will give them the info you just provided. Is there anything else I can tell them to help solve this problem?

Also, when this problem has happened in the past, you could sometimes pump the gas pedal and it would keep going or if it completely died, slip it into neutral and start it back up while still rolling down the street. However, recently it has begun cutting off and not starting back up for several minutes.

It sounds like an intermitent problem caused by a fuel pump that is overheating . one indicator of this is if the symptom occurs when the fuel level in the tank is 1/4 or lower, the fuel in the tank keeps the pump cool. The only way to diagnose this problem is to perform the appropriate test at the time the failure occurs. You must check the presence of fuel pressure at the fuel rail schrader valve, if 30 - 40 psi of pressure is present at the time of failure your fuel pump is OK if not proceed to listen for the momentary fuel pump hum near the gas tank as an assistant turns the key on the pump should come on for about a few seconds then shut off as the fuel presure in the line reaches 40 psi, if fuel pressure is ok if the pump appears to be working and there is a pressure issue replace the pressure regulator if problem persists proceed to pull out a spark plug then plug it into the wire as you are holding it with a insulated pair of pliers and ground it out and then have an assistant turn over the motor to check for the presence of spark, if no spark replace the ignition module. Ignition modules often have intermittent failures that are very hard to diagnose.

Was the engine control computer (known as a PCM) tested for trouble codes? when it stalls does it loose fuel pressure or spark, this is very important info if I am to help, I do however suspect you have a spark issue and with most loss of ignition spark parts failures there should be a trouble code, the most common failure is the Crankshaft Position sensor..

Do you think it may be occurring more in hotter weather, and/or when fuel level in tank is below 1/2 full?
More at morning, mid day,or late afternoon? Sorry to answer you with questions but that's part of diagnosing problem, and believe it or not, there is a method to my madness by asking these questions.

When it does quit, does it restart immediately, or only after sitting for a few minutes?

My 1995 jeep will die just driving and sometimes will start right back up other times you have to wait about an hour. fuel pump is working fine you can hear it

The pump can be running but not pumping any fuel.
When it stops running you will need to figure out if you are loosing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors.

1998 Chevrolet C3500 dies randomly when driving down the road - uphill, downhill or flat surfaces. Typically doesn't happen when it's cold. Sometimes it starts back up and sometimes it doesn&#

my younger brothers' truck did the same thing and there was a relay up under the dashboard that would get hot and shut of(kind of a circuit breaker unit) most of the operating systems will flash at you when only battery voltage is available which explains the lights coming on..these newer trucks also have a performance chip in the system that will act up when it gets warm also..replace this and you may be ok..let me know what happens also.. good luck.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Will die going down the road. Sometimes it starts back up without me touching the key.other times I have to wait a few minutes before it will crank again.Any suggestions? Thank...

I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?
