Question about 1996 BMW 318

Electrical Short??? I started having this issue about a month back. Thought I had it resolved but its back. For no apparent reason I went out one morning and the battery was dead. I jumped the car and drove it to work and had no issues the rest of the day. Again the next morning the battery was dead. I pulled the battery and had it charged and test at the local store. Everything tested fine so I dropped the battery back in and for some reason it blew the fuse for the electric door locks. That led me to believe it had a short in that system (door lock). I did not replace the fuse and everything was fine for almost a month. Then the same thing, dead battery. I can jump the car and it runs fine. I'm fairly certain the alt is fine, I pulled the battery cables off while it was running and the car ran fine. I can jump and drive around for 30-40 mins to charge the battery and the car will start fine unless you let it set for 4 hours or more at which time the battery dies. I've searched for a short but we all know how that goes. Any ideas? Particular places I could look for a short? Bad relays? Anything?

Has the stereo been changed recently? If not move to the cigerett lighter. These two are most likely the prob. But you could have a bare wire anywhere grounding out. Good luck and hope you find it.

I'm BAFFLED with a heater issue. Heat went off in my 1991 CRX SI with no apparent reason. Car is not overheating. Coolant in tank is full and it's clean. Top radiator hose is hot; bottom hose

Check the PUMP, there is apump that pumps the coolant from the radiator into the engine, if its broken you will have that problem.

Dual gas tanks, and one registers on the gauge and now the other registers empty. This just started to happen and for no apparent reason. Is there a simple fix or where should I start ?

If it reads empty, you probably have a short in the sender wiring to the tank, or the sender is bad. If you disconnect the electrical connector to the gauge near the tank, the gauge should then read full. You can then test the electrical resistance of the sender with the tank full and with it empty.

You could potentially have a problem with the fuel system. Does the vehicle sputter or seem to have trouble accelerating or going uphill if so I would suggest changing the fuel filter and dependant on the mileage may be due to receive a tune up. (your fuel pump may be going out and would need to be replaced)However, the fuel system has nothing to do with your starter, you said your starter won't even click sometimes. That could be a number of things from your ignition switch to a relay to your starter solenoid going out but with it occuring periodically is considered an intermittent problem/short which could be difficult to determine so start with what I mentioned and have an engine diagnostic performed you can get one for free at autozone etc or pay a dealer or someone like myself over $100 for a 5 minute diagnostic/evaluation

I had the transmission fluid checked. It was ok- Apparently a malfunction in the electrical system. The battery has been recharged and I drove it yesterday. It seems to be ok. I plan to replace the battery soon, since it has not been replaced since I purchased the car in 2004. I drive it so infrquently I think the battery simply died. It has been driven approximately 25 miles since December 2008. I plan to drive it on the highway this summer.

Starter or electrical problem?

first, i would bring the battery somewhere like autozone, where they can do a free diagnostic check. definately sounds like a battery problem to me. a bad starter should not have that affect on the entire electrical system and will not work if there is not enough current available. if the battery is not the culprit, you may have a bad relay or fusible link somewhere, but i am willing to bet it is the battery.
