Question about 1998 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

2001 eddie bauer ford expedition 4x4 no prior problems with transmission or gear slippage. had trans fluid and transfer case fluid changed last month. yesterday put suv in reverse and car jerked and died. then when speeding up it did not want to shift into higher gear and overdrive light on gearshift was flashing off. pulled over and put suv into park and then it would not go into any gear. turned car off and sat for 15-20 minutes and suv would go into gear but did not want to shift so stayed in first at 3 mph what could have happened?

Could be a shift control gone bad or varnish that got disturbed messing with trans internals this happens frequently when trans was very overdue for service.

Facing the front of the truck it is on the left side of the firewall under neath the dryer follow the hoses from the condenser to the fire wall there is a silver dryer cylinder under the wiring harness it is at the bottom of that. Hard to see without flashlight may have to remove the wiring harness from the firewall for easier access

My 1998 expedition eddie bauer 4 by 4 trans is slipping it goes in reverse but will not go forward

I would start by checking the fluid level just to be sure it hasn't lost enough fluid so it can't engage the clutch packs. If the fluid level is good the you could have an electronic control problem that is preventing it from working but odds are that something mechanical inside the transmission has worn out or failed. A transmission repair shop can hook up the the controller and should be able to determine what has happened fairly quickly. If the problem is inside the transmission it may need to be removed to be repaired. Good luck with your problem, hope this helps out a bit!

How do you change the cabin air filter on a 1998 4x4 Eddie Bauer Expedition

Some of these cars did not come with this option, as it had to be asked for. My 2001 Exped. don't have a cabin filter. But these can be installed at the dealer ship. So be sure yours have it.

My 2000 ford Expedition Eddie Bauer is having problems with the transmission. It seems to have trouble when deciding to shift. The car will stutter but the RPM's remain constant. Doesn't feel like slip....

HAS THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER BEEN CHANGED? IT IS DUE EVERY 60,000 MILES, TRANS FLUID HAS WHAT ARE CALLED "FRICTION MODIFIERS" IN IT, THEY WEAR OUT AND CAN CAUSE THE CHATTER YOU FEEL.

It grinds just sitting still? Will it do it with the transfer case in neutral or 4x4?
