Motor over heating and fans not turning on

check coolant level is up to the mark, then locate radiator temp sensor switch ( on the radiator ) and check connections, you can by pass the switch in the wiring plug to ensure the fans work, if fans operate the radiator sensor switches are probably at fault and will require renewal

Where is the fan temperature sensor located

actually, the ECM directing the sensor to actuate the switches. the engine thermostat is the actuator of the fans in the cooling system. and its located in the oulet port of the engine where the upper radiator hose is connected. (and or at the lower rad hose, some design on VWs).

Fan keeps running after engine is shut off

It is normal for the fan to run when engine is off. Engine temps actually rise when the engine is shut off, the heat will rise through the engine compartment. So a Coolant temp sensor controls when the fan shuts on and off, obviously based on the temps of the anti-freeze. The fans are a high draw item, but It would take much longer than an hour breakfast for the battery to run dead. I would check out the battery and charging system first. Is the CEL on? Let me know and we will trouble shoot from there. Thank you for using fixya.com
