Question about 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Truck is running hot.

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Truck is running hot. I have replaced the thermostat, radiator, & have had the head gasket checked. I was told that there was some rust that needs to be flushed out & that could be the cause of the problem. FYI, I drove the car home, about 200 miles or more before it started to go over to the 250 degree area. HELP!

Dunno had a 2000 just like yours still runs like a tank steady dependable sturdy know several other folks who have the 4.0 and never any problems. your motor is bulliproof, sounds like you just had bad luck and got a weak one. check the computer see if it needs resetting, is it thowing any codes? a shop should b able to tell you. it should run at 210 and not move. i drove mine in -5 below zero to 105 and it was allways the same so maybe you just got a bad one

Several possibilities, including blockage in coolant tubes of radiator, damaged or slipping impeller on water pump, blockage of air flow through radiator, inoperative radiator fan(s), damaged head or head gasket...

Does the radiator fan come on? If not, problem could be bad temp sensor or fan motor or wiring.

get a compression test. (same with all engines, with bad head gasket, you may see 2 cylinders real low. and classic reason.
the leak down on rad works too.
as does the blue/green dye test on same.

96 Grand Jeep Cherokee Check Temp Gauge Came On

Many things cause an engine to run hot: faulty engine thermostat, radiator or head gasket; a cooling system leak (low coolant level), inoperable cooling fan, etc. Don't throw parts at it. Have it checked out and repaired by a reputable shop in your area. The cost would be considerably more for an engine replacement.

Overheating replaced thermostat,no heat, sqeak at waterpump, top rad hose gets hot and solid

You vehicle blows head gasket very easy,to say it overheated and radiator is solid then you have combustion entering the cooling system. when the engine has cooled down and you can open the radiator cap smell the coolant does it smell like fuel or exhaust? If it does you definately have a head gasket

1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Keeps overheating. Replaced water pump, hoses, thermostat and belt. Runs between 220 & 240 without a/c on. Have been told it is either the coolant sensor or the fan...

Clutch Fan are known to fail over time, but I wold not rule out the radiator. The small passages inside the radiator will clog due to age. You did not mention how many miles are on the Jeep or if the Aux fan is kicking on.

Walk through on how to replace a thermostat in a 2001 Jeep grand Cherokee

Jennipherbrr,

1. Make sure the car is cold. Remove the radiator cap (press & turn about 1/4 turn to remove pressure in the system) Once the pressure is bled off you can remove cap and leave it rest on the filler opening.

2. Find the petcock on the radiator (the little valve attached to the radiator. You have to open/turn clockwise to drain the anti-freeze. Drain anti freeze below thermostat housing. About 1/2 to 1 gallon.

3. Have a catch basin for the anti freeze under the car. Remove upper radiator hose from radiator and thermostat housing.

4. Remove thermostat housing from engine block (usually two or three bolts in the thermostat housing). Scrap off ALL old gasket material from engine block. Double check and make sure all gasket material is removed from surface. If not the thermostat housing will leak.

5. Install new gasket with some high temp silicone. Place a couple of dabs on the thermostat housing and gasket (the silicone is used to keep the gasket in place) *MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL the thermostat the same way you took it out. Don't over tighten the thermostat housing bolts.

6. Remove the radiator cap and replace the anti freeze you removed (make sure the anti freeze is clean). Fill the radiator to the top of the filler neck and replace the radiator cap (push and turn the radiator cap to the right- like a pill bottle). Start the car and make sure the temperture guage goes up. The guage pointer should be in the middle of the guage.

7. Check the radiator reservoir for proper anti freeze level. DO NOT OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP WHEN THE CAR IS HOT!!! THE ANTI FREEZE IS HOT AND WILL BURN YOU.

Hope this helps
