Question about 1986 Ford Econoline

1 Answer

Hello, I have a 1986 ford e 350 Bus/van with a 5.8 gas engine,i replaced the fuel filter near the carb , it has an inlet fuel return and supply to the carb, it will start up and run and then dies, it has an inertia reset switch, this has a carb, i am guessing it has a pump in the tank. it also has a canister type fuel filter witha paper element, does this have a pump in the tank, it is an old red cross bus, any help would be great, Thanks, Carl

1973 ford f 250 new carb, and gas tank. fuel pump is less than a year old. will not start/run. acts like it is starved for gas.

Hey Dutch, have you tried anything like starting fluid to see if it will run..If it will not run, try removing the fuel line going to the carb..(does this carb have a filter in the inlet fitting???)..once the fuel line is loose.. (BE CAREFUL!) ..try starting the engine and see if fuel is pumped through the line to the carb...if you are not getting gas there.. time to work backwards until you find the problem..(does this engine have the fuel pump mounted on the side of the engine,if yes.. remember the fuel pump has to "pull" the fuel from the tank)..If you are getting fuel TO the carb.. make sure the carb is "taking" the fuel..(inlet filter).if you are getting fuel to the carb,, and it will still NOT RUN..(and won't run using "starting fluid")..its time to start looking for a timed spark..(assuming the engine has compression).. when you have done this, reply back to me on here... thanks... please mark as helpful.. Good luck..

Where is the fuel filter on a 1986 Pontiac bonneville

If you have the 4.3 V6 engine, the filter is in the fuel line under the frame. All of the others have a carb and the filter is in the inlet for the fuel line

Where is the fuel filter located on a 1986 gmc vandura 3500 cargo van?I followed the fuel lines from the tank all the way,I just can not seem to find it.thanks Martin

should be in the base of the carb, right behind that big nut on the fuel inlet. Loosen the fuel line, using a 5/8" wrench on the line nut, and a 1" wrench on the larger nut. remove the fuel line, then back the large nut out, and the filter will be behind that. have a good day !

1986 f-350 will run for about 15 seconds and cuts off. willnot crank again until you pour gas into carb.

Here are some ideas for troubleshooting.
Do you have a mechanical fuel pump? If yes, crack the fitting on the fuel inlet to the carb to see if it's getting gas. What I normally do is to actually take the top off the float bowl to see what's going on inside the carb with the engine running. If you are not comfortable doing that, just check the pressure at the inlet. If pressure is not there, first change the fuel filter and if that doesn't work, change the pump. If the pressure is there, rebuild the carb or buy a rebuilt carb. If you have questions, please let me know.

If you have an electric fuel pump:
Does the relay click when you turn the key on? If not, first check the fuse. You can often learn a lot by interrogating the pump relay socket. To do that, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check. One way to check the whole circuit is to check the voltage at the fuel tank on the pink and black wires when the key is turned on. Note that the ECM will not leave the pump on until the car is running, but it should prime it when the key is first turned on. The other thing to check is the intertia switch--especially if the truck was involved in an accident before this issue came about. The circuit for the electric pump is shown below. Pleae let me know if you have questions.

Have ford e-co-van 1 ton 350 series, 460 engine.1989

Ethanol really causes problems in cars that sit around. Thanks for us going green huh?It decomposes non-metal parts in the gas system. If the car sits around for something like 6 weeks the gas does go bad.You have to siphon the tank as much as possible. When filling up,add octane boost first then gas.It still may not work though.I did all that for a scooter and it still didn't work.So if you try it,when you add gas, probably only use 4 or 5 gallons,so you don't waste too much money if it doesn't work, and it is enough to mix the octane boost fairly well.Good luck bro'!That's all i have for now.And gas is gas no matter where you buy it.All those additives the companies claim clean this or that is just sales.Since fuel injection came out, companies are required to add a certain amount of detergent to keep injectors clean anyways. And 93 octane is not better than 87 octane enough to pay 20 cents more per gallon.

Your fuel pump would be located in the gas tank. It is mounted on the pick-up tube/sending unit assembly.

Strong order of gas fumes and black residue on spark plugs

The jets in the carb are too big for a 302 with a stock cam. Take it to a carb shop and have them replace the jets with stock jets. (Or DIY and hope). Whne you converted from FI to carb did you replace fuel pump to get correct 7 1/2 psi pressure at carb inlet? FI pumps put out 50+ psi and a regulator maintians pressure at the injectors on the order of 35 psi.. Of course, that much pressure would force inlet needle valve out of it's seat and would probably flood carb totally, but, check the fuel pressure at the carb just to be sure. Good luck. 302's rule!!!!
PS - Check cam specs - FI engine has different cam - intake duration is longer if I remember correctly. Been a while since I got inside an engine...

The fuel pump is on top of gas tank inside, you have to lower the tank, unless is mounted on gas tank side, follow fuel lines, thy are two, one main and one return, the fuel filter is on the main under driver
