Question about 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

Early model 2000 (looks like a 99) Tahoe Z71 with 5.7L and a 4speed automatic. Basic problem is that when the ambient temp is hot, (not the engine) it get stuck in park. Came out from work today, 100 degrees F, and I can't get it out of park. This has happened about 10 times in the last 2 weeks during hot weather here. If I let it sit until later at night, down to about 80F, it works fine. Also, the first time it happened, I set the brake and disconnected the shift linkage, and was able to select a gear. I drove it home and connected the linkage again. Any idea what part is possibly failing?

Ambient outside air temp sensor

i may be wrong but that sensor is for the ac not for engine operation and at 113 if its not that hot then the sensor is bad but if its summer its ok,, your engine works with intake air temp

My 2000 tahoe is blowing cold air.

Check your coolant level and make sure its full, next i would look into replacing your thermostat, if your thermostat is stuck open your engine isnt able to reach operating temperature therefore heater output suffers, your coolant temp gauge should read around halfway when the engine is hot if its not look into replacing the thermostat, if your gauge is reading halfway check the cable going to your heater box when you adjust your temperature on your heater controls its possible that the cable broke or the blend door inside the heater box is stuck into the cold position allowing only cold air to come through the vents.

2000 tahoe is hard to starter when engine is cold

Possible fuel soaking is causing this. The carbon build-up on the valves and the tops of the pistons can absorb excessive amount of fuel and cause this.Have a professional fuel system service performed on this vehicle and this will help if not eliminate this cold hard start.Another concern would be a faulty ambient air temp. sensor sending the wrong temp to the computer thus making the injectors flood fuel into the engine.
Hope this information is useful to you,

Transmission shifts early (Is this normal?)

the reason it might be shifting so early is because of the gear ratio in the rear end of the truck. it is common in the 2 wheel drive basic model pickup because they were designed to work not travel.

VW Golf 2000 1.6 16v automatic. Coolant temp. too low.

Is the heater nice and hot when the needle shows low temp? If the cooling fans turn on and the heater is hot, that leads me to believe the coolant temperature sensor is bad. You should try replacing that sensor. They are only $6 usd here. As long as your check engine light is not on and your fans are running, this will not hurt your car... but this is something you should fix soon if you can. Make sure the engine is cold when you replace the sensor

The ambient temperature sensor going bad causes this exact problem. I've replaced many of them because when they show outside temp as being below 60 degrees, the A/C control module will shut the compressor off.
