Automatic transmission lever does not go into P or L Estima
I have got an Estima 1995 2.4l 4WD with an automatic transmission. It goes quite well but the transmission lever does not go into P or L. Then I have to force it back into P when I want to park the car to be able to start it next time again.
It seems that everything is sliped once. At P is now R, N at R, D at N, 2 at D and thats why there is literally no space for L on the one end or P on the other. What can I do? Any idea?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

post #2 by you, on a 99 Diesel. again posting to USA forum with non usa car, right?> we dont have that diesel here. nor the matching trans, here. that means no books, nor listings in Mitchells covering it. zero , nada. why not be the first if millions to post country your car resides, (best is where bought new country) our USA car has only the 3.5L 6ve1w engine. gas. sorry, now that trans, answering in pure blind generic mode. 1: check all fuses. first. 2: check fluid levels in the box, using correct method, in your book (oper, guide) 3: get the transmission filter changed, and full flush. 4: On usa cars we have OBD2 and can scan the PCM and see all Transmission errors, in your country if not a clue. but it can be scanned, i bet. EOBD is Europe tool.
next time when posting in GREEN-go land post country first and make it a WIN/WIN=.
welcome to usa forum, we dont have Jimny here.
but car is kind simular to a vitara.
no year stated, so that makes real accurate answers impossible.
no transmission stated. or engine size
is it a stick or auto trans?
is car 2wd or 4wd?
is the lever stuck in nutural.?
or is the lever working right but the transmission fails in all gears and reverse.
mine has stick and 5 speeds, and reverse so has 6 gears to try.
If an automatic? trans. check the levels. per the operators guide do not guess.
and change its filter, if never done.
if automatic, make sure the lever moves its cable and the other end of cable is still attached to the trans lever. on the box.
they both move same amount, (cable drive does that)
if not the cable is bad, or bits there.
There may be more to it.. Transmission- P.T.O(Front wheels)-Rear Differential(Rear wheels). Or may have Transmission-Transfercase drives front differential(Front wheels) and rear differential(Rear wheels). So if one was rebuilt there should still be another that is still the root of the problem. Find out what exactly was rebuilt.
possible range selection detent switch not working causing to get stuck some times in one range only and wont shift to other range 4wd light in dash just keeps flashing for about 10 seconds then goes to previous state this then can jam up 2wd 4wd lever that you then cannot move.
there are 3 switches 2 on trans/transferr case, 1 on front LH diff axle tube actuator (shift on fly). can cause damge to the electric actuator then on transferr case.
suggest you get a dealer to look at or some one that knows this system. is also vaccum operated on front diff shift on fly unit and there were 2 different systems fitted to these vehicles push button 4wd on dash and lever next to gear lever which i take is yours
Automati Estimas have a safety device that locks the gear lever in 'park' until the brake pedal is pressed. Turn on the ignition and check that the brake lights are working, as the lock works on the same circuit. There may be a problem with the wiring to the lock mechanism
