93 ply. voyager 4 cyl w/5 spd manual trans with cable operated linkage. Linkage bushing (?) gone and won't shift into forward gears, will shift into reverse. Dealer uncooperative and I need to know where bushing(s) located and who has replacement parts. Thanks, B. Conover ?Any diagrams avail. online? again, thanks.

Thanks for the info. The cable is fine. The plastic round bushings have broken and I've done a jury rigged repair but would like to find a source for the proper round bushings that snap onto the trans. shift mechanisms. Local dealers are no help and won't even try to look up the parts, saying "that isn't available". Any source for the bushings? Thanks

Ron, good idea, hadn't occurred to me to check trans shops. 221,000 mi on this 2.5L 4 cyl. Still has orig clutch, exhaust syst., CV boots and axles, etc. Have only replaced alternator, fuel pump (what a Pain), and timing belt(s) as needed. Regular maint. and attention to little things really pays off as we try to use what we have and fix things ourself. Again, thanks for the suggestion. Bryan

Try calling Freedom Dodge in Lexington Ky. 859-268-5000 and ask for parts make sure you have the corect VIN in hand as they won't deal with you with out it. Most of the time the bushings in the ends of the cables come with the cables. As their were not many manaul trans vehicals made thier probly discontintued. but prevail and ask for the part number then ask where might they reconize the number they give you as they sold the parts to a liquidator that is trying to sell them somewhere. Don't forget to ask if the bushings come with the cable ! Most machine shops can make anything you want as long as you'll pay them. the old part or part of it will help. and as they can make anythiing they may make you a etter part because thats all theycan make. A solid bushing may transfer engine or road vibration to the gear shift the the orginal bushing was designed to avoid. A mechanical drawing of the part you need or a picture of it with the demenstions drawn in may help the fabriter. I make parts when I have to but only if I got a good customer.! Don't be pressing as these guys have got better things to do and helping you out is what their doing. The setup and fooling with you is what their going to lose over a stright order. You may have to find someone retired to do this kind of work. Ask as the machine shop as these guys know each other and they let them use their machines from time to time. Parts to be mated in hand will open doors tell em what you need and don't dicker with them sure It'll be higher than the 5 bucksthe part would cost if you could get it but their not going to rob you either.

Sounds like the shift cable is bad. To check unhook it from trans. With someone in the car. Start the car have them hold down the brake and see if you can shift the gears from under the hood. If you can the cable is bad, if not the problem is in the trans.

The dealer is the first choice, but you can try a transmission shop. If they don't carry the bushing maybe they could order you one. Good luck. Als most trans shops have things like that in their shops.

I have a 1989 300zx manual trans. Will not shift in to reverse what coud be the problem

Sounds like linkage from shift lever to transmission or the bushings on the linkage points. A "sloppy" shift lever with similar bushing problems may be the problem.

They have replacment shift linkage bushings on ebay, but a bit pricey. The bushing can be a Easy fix though if you have tools and time.
1st drill out the ball at the end of the linkage, this is the one your broken bushing use to ride on. Place a 3/8 inch bolt thru the drilled hole. Slide a piece of 3/8 inch heater hose over the bolt ( this is what the linkage ring rides on ) put a rubber gromet or rubber washer that has a hole big enough to fit over the heater hose on each side of the linkage ring ( oh and dont forget the lube - regular grease will eat rubber so use good judgement). put a washer big enough to keep your gromet or rubber washer from falling off, and then a lock nut, and I cannot stress the fact that it has to be a lock nut. DO NOT tighten the living **** out of everything, that little linkage ring is plastic after all just tighten it "lightly snugish" and just make sure your lock nut can't be un-tightened by hand. I hope all of this makes sense, anyway total repair cost- one hour of my time, about $4 of parts at the local auto parts store

It sound like the gear linkage isn,t set up right, you wouldn,t always be able to engage a gear unless you rocked the car.

Disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission and see if you can move the transmission lever into park manually. If you can't, then the internal trans linkage has a problem and pan will need to come down to find out why. If you can do this, then re-connect and adjust the linkage.Check any bushings on linkage pivot cranks...If a bushing is gone it may not be allowing linkage to move all the way to where it needs to go.

I have a 97 VW Golf auto trans, I have no reverse gear, no noise when placed in gear it just wont move, all forward gears work fine, any ideas for me

Check your fluid level to make sure its up to the specified level, then I'd be checking out your linkage from your shifter inside the car right to the transmission, it sounds like to me your linkage may be worn enough to put the vehicle in drive but not reverse. The linkage bushings are a common problem on vdubs. See if you can put the car in reverse by moving the linkage arm directly attached to the transmission (make sure you have someone in the car with the brakes on or caulk the wheels) if it does go into reverse when you manually move the direct linkage arm at the transmission then replace your linkage bushings, if not then the only other problem would be a transmission internal problem. Good luck

Why a cadillac won,t go into reverse ,but drives good going forward

Either the linkage needs adjustment, or the reverse gear is gone.

To tell if it is the linkage, look at the letters and see if the shift arrow matches up P,R,N,D,2,1

If the arrow is off and doesn't point at right letter, you should adjust the cable that goes from shifter to tranny. Follow the cable and there will be an aduster on it. Turn to right to tighten and left to loosen.
