2005 ion power steering problem

Just today, I had the same problem. I have 75,000 miles on my car, have never jumped started or replaced by battery. My power steering light comes on, I lose power steering, pull off on the side of the road, turn car off, restart, put in drive and the light comes back on with the same effects. I'm concerned...the Saturn dealership closed in Tyler, Texas. Can I take it to any GM dealer for computer diagnosis? Is this covered under the 5 year/100,000 warranty?

It's my understanding it's an electrical steering system, so there is no fluid. Fuses are OK. Any other suggestions?

Remove electronic power steering (EPS) motor. remove the 4 bolts that hold on the motor housing. remove the housing. using a tooth brush, clean out the 'brush' dust from between the commutators. don't use cleaner spray as you might degrease the bearings. don't use anything metal to clean out the dust you might scratch or nick the commutators.

this solution has worked for over 500 miles for me. I'll keep you posted.

The 2005 Saturn Ion doesn't use fluid. It has electric power steering.

PS: I'm having the same problem and through research it looks like either the fuse (if you jump started it wrong) or the huge cost of replacing the Power Steering Control Module.

I have the same problem with a 2005 Saturn Ion. I did receive a recall letter for cars that are not older than 10 years or 100,000 miles. I haven't taken mine in because it's over 100,000 miles. The 05 Ions (and many other similar GM models) do NOT have power steering fluid. It's completely electronic.

Have you checked the power steering fluid in awhile?

Just because it says power steering dosn't mean that there is no fluid . I promise not to lie but your problem is probably due to lack of power steering fluid or a loose power steering belt.

I bought a 2005 Nissan Frontier back in 2010 and have never had problems with it. Recently though, I have heard a whining, albeit slight, and I'm wondering if it could be a belt. I notice any diff

Its either a belt, or one of the pulleys. Take a chunk of hose and while the truck is running, place the hose by each pulley, put it next to your ear, and listen for rattling or grinding noises coming from the bearings. It could be low power steering fluid as well or a pump starting to wear.

I have a 06 saturn ion, automatic, i left my lights on, my battery died so i got a jump start, now the check engin light is on, the power steering indicator is on, the speedometer doesnt work and when

most of the time people unknowingly jump start the vehicle and blow the steering fuse in the engine compartment-this is a very common problem that I have seen at least 2x a week. The check engine light is probably related to a battery voltage low code or an electronic steering code. Check your owners manual for the location of the fuse and just replace it.

jumping the car 2005 typical ignition control module. In todays 2000 and above you are supposed to disconnect then charge the battery, Oh well acces the fuse box and ck to see if any fuse has blown out. Make sure terminal are tight and drive it at part throttle with a/c on see if that will bring the drive parameters back.

Power steering

I used to own a 2005 Cobalt SS supercharged, basicaly the same thing as an Ion Redline. I know that on my car, there is an electric power steering pump, rather than a belt driven. If you have to same system, there may be an electrical problem causing the power steering to stop working and start again after turning off and starting the car again. If you are still under warenty, I would recomend taking your car to the dealership.

you need to replace either your high pressure line or your return line before you go and replace the entire power steering pump which could have a leak in it too. somehow you are losing fluid presure somewhere due to a leak .

Call the consumer safety commision and make a formal complaint. It is a safety issue. Loss of steering control of vehicle at freeway speeds. If its a new car, everytime it locks up, have it towed to the dealer. Even if its in your driveway. They get three hits and it is deemed a lemon if not repaired. Buy another carwith your refund..

2004 Saturn Ion - Power Steering Problem

The motor on the power steering is overheating which causes the thermal overloads to trip.

go tho the junk yard and buy a motor for a 2004 thru 206 ion or a 2004 thru 2008 chevy colbalt.

they are all the same. You may have to buy the wholle steering colum but you can remove the motor with 2 - 12mm bolts and a quick dissconnect pulg. Replace just the motor as the whole steering colum is a bit more complicated. the dealerships want you to replace the whoe steering colum, in fact that is the only way they sell the parts. It is a scam. Just the motor needs to be replaced.
I have done it on 4 different ions. try to get a motor with few as possible miles and as new as possible. I have paid between $50 and $125 for these. The dealer wants $900 fnad about $500 to install. It is very simple to do. Only 2 bolts.
