Use a bar with holes in it to attach to the pinion flange
that will allow you to hold the pinion while undoing the nut
use an impact gun that has a capability of more than 400 ft/lbs

You need a 250lb torque electric impact gun to ever think about getting the pinion nut loose. It really doesn't take that much power, but the bigger the better. You also need to fix the tires so they do not turn while you getting the nut loose, otherwise the rear will just turn the tires. Only reason I figure your trying to get the pinion nut loose is that you want to change or reset the differential gears. You're best off taking it to a shop. If you don't know how to get the pinion nut loose, You're not going to understand how to do the rest of the process either. Take it to a shop or dealership Bro.

Just got a 1972 chevy impala with a 402 engine need to know what gears are in the rearend..

There were up to 4 ratios used in the differentials for these vehicles so unless you can see a tag under a bolt or a number stamped in the housing there is not much way you can tell. Fortunately the ratios a fairly specific so if you jack up one wheel and have some one count the number of times the drive pinion turns while you turn the wheel 1 revolution and divide the pinion turns by 2 that will give you close to the ratio. That is to say if you turn the wheel 1 turn and the pinion turns 5-1/2 times then the ratio will be 2.5 to 1

Whining in the rearend as long as you accelerate

Sounds like rear pinion bearings or the ring and pinion is worn and causing the problem, sometimes you may be better off to find a lower mileage used rear carrier unit, they typically come with a warranty, be sure to use recommended fluid.

Need new rear end for a 1996 Chevy Camaro (interchange options?)

camaro firebird and transam axles are what i would go for. remember lots of people change out the ratio just look for one with posi it will bolt right up if the ratio is wrong it will only affect speedo and fuel economy a little bit. this can also be changed easily with your ring and pinion out of the old one if need be.

1990 Chevy CK1500 2 wheel drive pickup - Rear end

Is the rearend blown into peices? if yes replace the whole thing. If not put it in reverse and have someone look to see if the rear driveshaft is spinning. If it is you more than likely need a ring and pinion set in the rearend. If it doesn't spin the problem is in your transmission not the rearend.

Gear Ratio

there should be a tag on one of the rearend cover bolts indicating the ratio.if not remove cover count all the teeth on the ring gear and pinion, divide the ring gear # by the # of pinion teeth and that will be your ratio.
