Question about 1990 Dodge Caravan

Overheating The engine overheats in summer but okay when weather mild,have changed the thermostat to summer .Is there some kind of sensor that would cause this problem?

It is your thermostat switch located in the cooling system that is not activating the cooling fan.As a principle,most of these fans kicks in when temperature reaches half.

first check coolant level in radiator coolant level sound low.if coolant overflow jug empty.coolant sysyem low, when add coolant to coolant overflow jug coolant level should stay at full cold mark.if coolant level okay,engine overheat while sitting or moving in slow traffic either coolant fan relay or fuse could be bad.or engine coolant temperature sensor could be bad. coolant sensor turn on cooling fan at certain temperature.hot wire check to make sure cooling fan motor not bad or short in wires.if all is good have pcm check it controls fan relay to through the coolant temperature sensor signal when coolant get hot.

The two statements are contradictory. The thermostat should assist in warming up the engine in the cold but if it is stuck closed it would overheat but warm up quickly. Overheating in the summer could be the fan not kicking in in traffic. You can check a thermostat by boiling it in water and observing the temperature at which it starts to open. This information should be stamped on the unit. You can also watch the fan to see if it kicks in with the engine idling when hot. If it does not it could be the thermostatic switch or the fan itself.

2000 EXPEDITION OVERHEATING 4 MILE AFTER LEAVING HOME NEW RADIATOR, FLUSH, AND NEW THERMOSTAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS


Here are a few things to try. Check your Radiator cap pressure as a weak cap will boil over more quickly. Replace your Temperature sending unit. There may be 2, one is for the dash gauge and the other is for engine control. Unless you have other signs of overheating you may not be overheating at all, just a bad sender.

Next, the cooling fan clutch is what the fan blade is mounted on. This is checked by using a Timing light with a RPM tach made into it. The fan clutch "locks" at a variable temperature. In cold weather it slips internally. In hot weather it engages or "locks". A mechanic measures the RPM of the blade to the RPM of the engine. This tells if the fan clutch is slipping too much internally.

Before considering a new water pump try a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys. If your Catalytic converters are plugged the engine will overheat. You should have a Code for this problem in the onboard computer. About all you can try after this is to remove the Thermostat completely and see if the engine still overheats.

You will have to replace the New Thermostat again because the other engine controls will not work right without it. But without the thermostat you can test for collapsed Radiator hoses at say 2500RPM or above. Thats about all I can think of, the water pump would cost the most. The cap, sensor-sender, fan clutch, and hoses are not that expensive.

My 99 cavalier is overheating i have changed head, gasket, radiator, fan, and have no thermostat, is it absolutely necessary to have one in the system


During the summer, you can run without a thermostat without any significant problems. In cold weather however, having no thermostat will prevent your car from warming up to normal operating temperature in a reasonable period of time, which will put additional stress on the engine and reduce your gas mileage substantially. You will also get virtually no heat to the passenger compartment. Two things you should check in regards to overheating: Is your water pump working and does your radiator fan switch on when the temperature rises above @190 degrees? If the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it, you might as well replace the pump now. Don't use a rebuilt pump. They are ****. Get a new pump and a good quality thermostat. If the fan doesn't come on when it should, you probably need an new fan switch/sensor. These are inexpensive and easy to replace. Also check for signs of damage to the wiring leading to this sensor, and check the fan fuse and relay. Finally, make sure that your antifreeze mix is no more than 70% antifreeze to water for winter weather, or 70% water to antifreeze in summer. 50/50 is a good bet for year-round reliability, but a higher % water will tend to cool the engine more efficiently. Having said all that, I suspect your water pump is the main problem. If you notice a slow drip of coolant near the pump, you can be almost certain it has failed.

It is overheating in 32 degree weather.....I have checked to see if my radiator is gettign enough anti freeze and it's fine but i dont know why it keeps overheating


The engine overheat is due to inefficient cooling. Therefore, there is coolant in the radiator but if it doesn't circulate inside the engine water-jacket to remove the heat generated from combustion's chambers, then it still causes overheat. If this keeps happening then it can cause the engine head wrapped then leaking from the gasket as people called blowed head gasket. It could be: 1- Thermostat is not opened. 2- Water pump is not working. Before starting to replace parts, it needs to verify it it is the root cause of the problem. Take out the thermostat and run the engine to feel if there is water flowing inside the upper hose. A- If it is not then water pump is not working. B- If is, then run the car a few days without thermostat to see if it causes overheated. C- Running car without thermostat still causes overheat then there are some clogging up in the water jacket defeating the cooling efficiency--> Need a good flush. Good luck.

Water pumps can stall out, but do you have air trapped in system.
Had you recently had the system "open" to replace hose, thermostat, temp sensor. Some Ford and GM have a bleeder screw on a high point in cooling system to bleed out trapped air.

Check your trans fluid color. Since the trans cooler is built into radiator (automatics)

IF the engine is overheating the trans CAN overheat
IF the trans is overheating the engine CAN overheat

They share the same cooling source and trans fluid gets hotter than oil, but yet it has a wimpy cooler built into radiator. Maybe add trans oil cooler to system.

Also outside temp affects the cool down rate of the radiator, ie...hot air trying to cool down hot radiator/engine is less effecting than cool air cooling hot radiator/engine
