Question about 1991 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

1991 Toyota SR5 won't start when it's hot

Usually it happens after I have run the truck on a hot day, especially when I have used the air conditioning. If I turn the ignition off, it won't start again. I've had to have the truck towed a couple of times now. Battery is new and wires are too--ultra clean. I can hear the relay click inside the cab, but nothing else. It doesn't even try to start. If I wait until the next day when it's cool, the truck starts right up. Someone suggested that the starter may have something inside that prevents it from starting if too hot?? I've never heard of such a thing. I would love to know if there's a good reason for this behavior. Thanks!

I believe that click you are hearing is your starter engaging but its not cranking your engine over. Your starter must first shoot out to engage your flywheel and then it should crank it. i suggest you get your starter tested to verify.

1991 Toyota Celica, after running at temp. won't restart until it cools down. I don't thing the radiator fan is running. Also, it won't even crank, all the dash lights come up like usual but...

Usually that happens when the ignition coil gets hot. Not sure if your car has one. It looks like a round cylinder with a spark plug wire connected to it.

You need to have the ignition switch replaced. You can do it yourself, but you would need a manual to tell you how to take the steering column apart.

1991 Toyota SR5 won't start when the weather is very hot

I checked the gages of the wiring which went into the battery, as suggested by another person on the site, but nothing looked out of place. I then proceeded to check wiring connections throughout the vehicle and found there were 2 sets of wires on the driver's side which were not attached to its counterpart. I remember the mechanics disconnecting those a few years ago, as they stated it was causing the problem. I decided to re-establish the connection for both sets of wires and the truck started immediately with out any further problems.
