Most likely you need to have a new "3/2 Shift Solenoid" installed in tranny. Take it to a Jeep dealer to have it verified by computer diagnostic which usually runs around $30.00.

Yes...3/2 Shift Solenoid is located inside the tranny and can be replaced by removal of tranny pan...if you do so, you might as well go ahead and change your tranny oil and filter

Look for a vacuum hose going to the trans from the intake. to the modulator valve. or look at the kick down linkage, make sure the rod is hooked up and adjusted correctly

what does it do.
flare or slip
fail to up or down shift correct
shift to wrong gear say 2 to 4, or 2 to 1.?

Why when i put in drive and go it goes into 1 or2 or drive by it self while driving

It always starts out in first, it's a 3 speed automatic, that's what automatics do. they start out in first and at about 15-20 miles per hour , they shift to second gear, and when the speed is about 35-45 MPH, the transmission automatically shifts into third gear, or Drive.

Bigger automatics have 4 or more speeds. Till recently, 4 speeds were the norm, and fourth gear was often dubbed Overdrive, as it allowed the engine to run slower in 4th gear, than it had to maintain speed in 3rd gear, drive. It's good, it increases your mileage per gallon of gas, so you save that way, but like all things more complicated, they cost more to fix when something goes wrong.

How many times does a transmission supposed to shift starting from drive in a 1988 dodge ram with a 318 motor

Depends if you have a regular 3 speed automatic, or a 3 speed with overdrive.
Put it in drive, it will start out in first gear, then shift into second at about 15 MPH, into third at about 30-35 MPH. With overdrive, fourth gear will kick in at about 45-55MPH.

I have a 1987 jeep wrangler and it will not shift into 4 wheel dr

The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.

Open door tone???

Are both doors closing tightly? Perhaps one is just loose enough for it to send signal that it's open. Even try sitting still with vehicle running and open one door at a time, and push lever of button that trips it, in with your thumb, to see if it stops. if you come across one that doesn't do it instantly, or it goes on /off with slightest movement, you probably found the culprit. Let's try the free/cheap/obvious things first.
