That line is just the breather tube for the tcase. the 4x4 vacuum lines are hard plastic lines that run from the tcase to the front axle disconnect

You should really buy a repair manual to find out where that line goes, that way you know what it looks like and if anything else may have come disconnected... i prefer Haynes Repair Manuals.

The idiot mechanic said to me "it's an 18 year old POS, buy American. It's an 18 year old Pathfinder in just awesome condition and I'll spend the $$ to repair the clunking tcase noise. The 4whl high is just fine.

4x4 quit working..from what i have been told it could be vacumn hose..where is this..

I had the issue where the 4x4 light on the dash would come on when I shifted into 4WD, but the axle did not engage. That was due to a clogged vacuum line on the axle disconnect. This is located in the axle (the vacuum portion is on the backside of thetube) on the passenger side. There you will see 2 vacuum lines and an electrical connector. May look like this:_332.jpg_334.jpg_333.jpg

The transfer case will not shift into 4 wheel hi or low 4 wheel drive auto with elect shift

I would suspect the vacuum disconnect motor or the vacuum solenoids for the disconnect motor ( or the vacuum lines ), but best to confirm
Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

With the engine running ( and wheel chocked, parking brake on ) have someone shift into 4WD, and watch the shift motor to see if it operates
It is on the front axle, looks like this

If the disconnect motor does not shift, you can check the vacuum on the lines with a vacuum gauge. Blue line is 4WD operation, pink line is 2WD operation.
The vacuum solenoids are on the firewall, and look like this

This is the block diagram for the ESOF vacuum operation of the disconnect motor.

This is assuming you have checked the fuses for the transfercase shift motor, and the vacuum solenoids.

I have a 1995 Silverado 4x4. The 4WD will not engage. Someone told me it may be the actuator for the transfer case. When I try to shift into 4hi, nothing happens. When I try to shift into 4lo, it grinds...

I HAD A BLAZER WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR AND SOLVED PROBLEM. TRANSFER CASE MOTOR SHIFTS FROM HIGH TO LOW GEAR IN THE TRANSFER CASE AND TELLS THE FRONT ACTUATORS TO INGAGE FRONT HUBS . MOTOR WON'T MOVE TO 4 HIGH AND GRINDS WHEN TRYING TO MOVE TO 4 LOW, TRANSFER CASE MOTOR FAILING . CHECK VACUUM LINES AND ACTUATORS ON FRONT DIFF THEY FAIL, CAN CHANGE TO CABLE ENGAGEMENT INSTEAD OF FAILURE PRONE VACUUM ACTUATORS.

No 4wd in a 1998 dodge ram 2500 w/360

check behind the right side of the front axle and look for 2 vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. also check on driver side just infront of the transfer case and check the vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. usually the problem is the vacuum lines have become caught on something and disconnected themselves.

Transfer case wont engage

shift into 4wd and move truck a couple of feet.
if light is still off, park truck block the wheels set the park brake jack right front wheel and try to hand spin the wheel if wheel doesn't turn 4x4 is functioning properly but there is a wiring problem use an ohmmeter to check the 4x4 switch wiring fuse and bulb
if wheel turns freely the front axle or transfer case is not engaged
attempt to hand spin the front driveshft if the driveshaft will spin the transfer case is not engaged check the transfer case shift linkage, problem is in linkage or transfer case internals
if the driveshaft will not spin the transfer case is engaged properly
with trnsmission in neutral or park start engine measure vacuum on the two vac lines at front axle shift motor . one line should have approx 20" vacuum. other line should have none
if no vacuum measured look for vac leak or bad vac switch
if both lines have vac look for a bad vac swithc or ruptured cad actuator diaphragm
if one line has 20" +- VAC
move transfer case lever to 2wd measure vac again lines should have swapped vac signals
if no vac switch bad or 4wd shift likage needs adjusting
if yes vac motor bad or stuck or shift fork stuck
remove vac shift motor from the axle attach vac lines to shift motor engage disengage 4wd
does shift motor plunger move at least 1/2 inch
no shift motor bad
yes check axle shift fork and vac motor for binging

4x4 not working 1999 1500

need to check the central axle disconnect (cad) to make sure the vacuum lines are still attached, and check the vacuum pump to make sure it is working when you select 4wd. cad located on passenger side of front axle tube, vacuum pump located on transmission crossmember
