Question about 2003 Kia Optima

My optima looks to have 2 oxygen sensors on the front of the engine 1 upper passenger side and 1 lower drivers side exhaust. After looking online at parts i see a couple of different sensors for the same description where can i get the correct part item so i know which one to order?

The sensors are the same, One is in the upstream location and one in the downstreat location. A scan of your engine codes will tell which one is at fault usually. I have been able to do a price challenge with Advance Auto in the past and saved significant money by printing the online ad and visiting the local store.

odd question both split, mans are one same side of the I6 !

and sure there is a I6 with s split man, with 2 CATS/

so bank 1 is closed to cylinder 1
bank 2 is closed to cylinder 4.
Pulley, 1,2,3, 4,5,6
no mater what Suzuk BODY or driveline this engine fits.
Bank 1 is at the CRANK SHAFT END PULLEY.

The 1999 5.3 V8 engine had 4 oxygen sensors. There are two catalytic converters on this engine, one on the driver side of the engine, and one on the passenger side of the engine. This is important to know, as the number of oxygen sensors is directly related to the number of catalytic converters on the vehicle. Driver side is referred to as Bank 1, passenger side is referred to as Bank 2. This is very important to know when looking up replacement oxygen sensors. There is one oxygen sensor in front of, or before the catalytic converter, usually referred to as a pre-catalyst O2 sensor. There is also one behind, or after the catalytic converter, usually referred to as a post-catalyst oxygen sensor. So, you have two oxygen sensors on Bank 1, and two oxygen sensors on Bank 2, for a grand total of 4 oxygen sensors.

Here is the low-down on oxygen sensors, and their location designations explained:

Oxygen sensors are screwed into the exhaust system at various points. Some people say that there are 4 oxygen sensors, but technically, that is not correct. Only the front 2 are considered oxygen sensors.

These oxygen sensors are screwed into the exhaust pipe or directly into the exhaust manifold, one on each bank. Because they are in front of the catalytic converter, this is often referred to as 'upstream'.

The other 2 are actually called catalyst monitors. They are oxygen sensors, but they serve a different purpose. They monitor the activities of the catalytic converters, thus the name, catalyst monitors. They are screwed into the exhaust one on each bank, after, or downstream, of the catalytic converters.

On a 4 cyl engine, there are only a total of two such sensors, the one in front of the catalytic converter is the O2 sensor, the one behind the cat is the catalyst monitor.

The location names for them are as follows:
  • On a 4 cyl, the front / upstream is called "bank 1 sensor 1" and the rear / downstream sensor is called "bank 1, sensor 2."

  • On a V6 or V8 engine:

    • the passenger side bank on a forward facing engine, or the bank closest to the firewall on a transverse mounted engine, is bank number 1, so the forward / upstream sensor on that bank would be "bank 1, sensor 1."

    • The driver's side bank (forward facing mount engine), or front bank (transverse engine) would be bank number 2, thus the forward / upstream sensor on that bank would be "bank 2, sensor 1," and the rearmost / downstream sensor on that bank would be "bank 2, sensor 2."

Federal Emissions Package (4.0L and 4.7L engines):

With this emission package, the right upstream sensor (2/1) is located in the right exhaust downpipe just before the mini-catalytic convertor. The left upstream sensor (1/1) is located in the left exhaust downpipe just before the mini-catalytic convertor. The right downstream sensor (2/2) is located in the right exhaust downpipe just after the mini-catalytic convertor, and before the main catalytic convertor. The left downstream sensor (1/2) is located in the left exhaust downpipe just after the mini-catalytic convertor, and before the main catalytic convertor.

Where are the front 02 sencers located


There are 4 oxygen sensors on the Windstars They are divided into 2 banks of 2.
- Bank 1 is the for the rear 3 cylinders of the engine
- Bank 2 is for the front 3 cylinders.

Bank 1 / Sensor 1 (upstream) is located just below, in the pipe, the exhaust manifold on the back of the engine.

REMOVE TIP: you may have to bend part of the transmission heat shield out of the way - be sure to put it back when done.

Bank 1 Sensor 2 (downstream) is located just past the drivers side catalytic converter. Bank 2 Sensor 1 (upstream) is located just below the exhaust manifold, in the pipe, at the front of the van - access is from the top. Bank 2 Sensor 2 (downstream) sensor is located just past the passenger side catalytic converter.

NOTES: * Use lots of penetrating oil - allow to soak - to make removal easier and avoid damaging the exhaust pipe

* The sensors are screwed directly into the pipe at a 90 degree angle and look like spark plugs with either 8", 12", or 14" wires attached to them

Need to replace bank 2 sensor 2 on 2003 toyota highlander , where is it located


Bank 2, sensor 2 is a heated O2 sensor located below (after) the catalytic converter on the passenger-side. When this sensor gets clogged and/or goes bad from rust and heat fatigue, the voltage drops low enough to cause the electronic control module to register error code P0161, which then causes the check engine light to come on.

To replace Bank 2, sensor 2, remove the debri shield from just behind the front bumper, underneath the vehicle. There will be 10 bolts holding it on (10mm, I believe). After removing it, look toward the center of the newly exposed area and you will see 2 finger-like objects projecting out from the engine with wires coming out of each. The one on the left (passenger-side) is bank 2, sensor 2. The one on the right (driver-side) is bank 1, sensor 2.

I got my direct-fit sensor online for $55 from Remart Auto Parts. I know it is tempting to get the universal-fit type and save the cash. But after doing that once, I wouldn't care to do it again.

I found a YouTube video showing pictures of where the two lower (after catalytic converter) sensors are located. While the video only points out the driver-side sensor (bank 1, sensor 2), it's easy to spot the other one being only inches away.

1.Bank 1 is on the driver side.
2.Bank 2 is on the passenger side.
3.Sensor 1 is the upper sensor or upstream sensor in the manifold.
4.Sensor 2 is the downstream sensor.

Oxygen sensors are always numbered like this:

Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1
Bank 1 sensor 2
Bank 2 sensor 2

some manufacturers use a kind of shorthand that reads different, but means the same thing:
Sensor 1/1 or O2s 1/1
Sensor 2/1 or O2s 2/1
Sensor 1/2 or O2s 1/2
Sensor 2/2 or O2s 2/2

Bank 1 is always the side of the engine where cylinder number 1 is located and, of coarse, Bank 2 is the opposite side.
On a 4 cylinder engine, there is only 1 bank and it is always referred to as Bank 1.

Sensor 1 is always the upstream sensor (The one located BEFORE the catalytic converter)
Sensor 2 is always the downstream sensor (the one that is located AFTER the catalytic converter.

Most GM engines have #1 cylinder located on the left bank, (or Driver's Side) of the engine,

So, the answer to your question would be that you are looking for the sensor located before the catalytic converter on the right (or Passenger Side) of the truck.
