My Gould pump has been working fine for 2 months now has stopped pumping. Now when you turn it on it hums for 30 seconds and then kicks off. It has water in it so don't know what the problem is.

Pump impeller jammed ,motor bearings seized,motor seized ,short in pump windings if 208 possible lost a line feed --need to check power and pump to see if turns

Car won't start

most likely a fuel issue, could be a bad pump... turn the key to the on position and listen for the hum of the pump kicking in, if there is no hum it is most likely you fuel pump needs to be replaced or you have a bad electrical connection to it.
If it hums there may be a blockage somewhere in the line.

letting a gas tank run under 1/4 tank can burn out a fuel pump, the gas in your tank actually insulates the pump and helps keep it cool.

My brake lights are stuck on, and my fuel pump kicks off after 30 sec after starting the car, would the brake lights cause that problem

brake light switch not mounted anymore, you probably kick it not relizing what you did ! re-install switch to bracket @ pedal . NO , this has nothing to do with fuel pump ! check fuses, & fuel pump relay, it may have a fuse also ! ? when you turn key on, you should hear a hum for 2 seconds, thats your pump priming it self to start your engine. check all ground wires for good ground !!!!!!!

Engine won't crank. seems like no fuel getting to engine. Had the dealer replace the fuel relay worked for several days... replace it again myself....but still won't crank.

How can you tell if the fuel pump is bad

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. The easiest way to tell if it is kicking on is my listening for the sound of the pump. When you first turn the key, you should hear a humming sound for a second or two. This is your fuel pump kicking on. If you don't hear it, it is not kicking on. If so, check your fuel pump fuse, relay, or reset button if you have one. It is possible that the pump works but is just not getting power. You would have to test it from the pump with a voltage meter to know for sure. If you don't hear it kicking on though, it may be bad. If you have cranked it a lot, it might not turn on because the pump is already primed, so let it rest before you try it again.

Will not start, do not smell any gas

i had a 2000 chevy venture wbe. i had to replace the in-tank electric fuel pump at 107,000 miles. open the fuel door, remove the gas cap and have someone listen closoly. try to start and if you hear a HUMMING sound once the key is turned, then fuel pump is working. if no hum, the fuel pump is bad. upon start-up it kicks in 2-3 seconds to build up fuel pressure...

Car starts but turns off try starting car second time it will start with a little gas will run fine. it does this every time when starting car. was told that fuel pressure is low. car accelerates with out...

i would somehow either test the fuel pump and filter and replace the one that is not working, or replace them both. to test the filter you can try to take the filter off and blow through it. if no air comes out the other side, its clogged. for the pump, turn your key until it stops before the engine starts and listen carefully for a hum from by the gas tank. the hum is the fuel pump turnig on; if their is no hum, your fuel pump needs to be replaced.

How do i check to see if fuel pump is working

ON THE FUEL RAIL YOU WILL SEE A SCHRADER VALVE(LIKE ONE ON A TIRE FOR AIR), IF YOU PRESS ON THE NEEDLE IN THE CENTER OF THE VALVE, FUEL SHOULD SPRAY UP IN THE AIR AT LEAST TWO FEET OR MORE. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE CAP OFF FIRST. WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION, THE FUEL PUMP SHOULD MAKE A HUMMING SOUND FOR ABOUT THREE SECONDS, AND THEN STOP. IF YOU DON'T HEAR THE PUMP THEN CHECK THE FUSE AND RELAY FOR THE PUMP IN THE FUSE PANEL. WELL THIS SHOULD CLARIFY ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE CONCERNING THE FUEL PUMP. HOPE THIS HELPS. 99 gmc wont start

check electric fuel pump operation ( located in the fuel tank ). Occasionally a fuel pump will burn out when running out of fuel, due to the fact the pump runs DRY for about 30 seconds till the fuel stops flowing out of the injectors, the engine quits, simultainously losing oil pressure which FINALLY shuts off the fuel pump. Sometimes TOO LATE. Hope this helps

05 ford ranger 3.0 xlt fuel pump???

I had this same issue. There is an inertia switch located below glove box. Mine went bad. Here is what I wrote to another person with the similar problem:

I have a 2005 Ranger Edge. I had the same problem. I did two things. First I replaced the fuel pump and it worked again for about 2 months. Then it stopped working again so I replaced the inertia switch with a new one from the Ford Dealership. It worked again for about a month. Than it stopped again, so I replaced the wiring that goes from the inertia switch to the main box on the bottom right passenger side. I also put the inertia switch inside the casing on the lower right so it couldn't be kicked. It has been working for 2 weeks now. I hope nothing else happens.

On another note, I had another electrical problem. My speedometer cluster stopped working and my mechanic found loose wires rubbing against metal on the inside. I think the electrical components on these Ford Rangers are just cheaply made. That is the only thing to check for you now. If it isn't the fuel pump or the inertia switch, just check all the wiring from fuel pump to inertia switch to make sure it is all done correctly. Also check all fuses for fuel pump/inertia switches.

Sometimes I say I and mean a mechanic, I am not a car expert, but would like to be.
