Question about 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

How do you wire up a trailer harness to a 1999 Grand Voyager?

I've experimented over 2 summers trying to wire up a simple 4 point trailer harness to my 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager van. I've tried, seriously, hundreds of different ways. I have found that I needed a converter but on this vehicle, its not just that there are separate bulbs for the turn signals and brake lights. In each rear lens there are 3 bulbs. One controls the tail light and the brake light. The second controls the tail light and the turn signal. The 3rd of course is just for the back-up light so we can forget about that one. So both the bulb that controls the brake light AND the bulb that controls the turn signal are also on when the tail lights are lit. The real confusing thing on this van is that there is one circuit for the left tail light and head light and a second one for the right tail light and head light. I'm to the point where I've gotten the left tail light, brake light and turn signal to work OK, along with the brake light cutting off for when the turn signal is on. Although I've tried a hundred different things, I cannot get a brake light on the right side. I'm beyond desperate.

Brake light fuse keeps blowing in my 1997 Suburban only when towing trailers.

If the fuse blows on different trailers then it's all down to the vehicle. You either have incorrect wiring on the vehicle, a short OR the fuse is not of a high enough value to cope with the additional brake lights? You could try removing all the trailer bulbs EXCEPT the brake lights - e.g. if it's trying to power up the indicators too? That would stop the fuse blowing...... OR remove the brake bulbs from the vehicle & see if it operates the trailer without blowing...... Check the total wattage of ALL the brake lamps & see if the fuse is actually of a high enough rating? Be aware though that increasing the value of the fuse could cause damage elsewhere! As a rough guide a 25 watt bulb will pull around 2 amps at 12 volts - so 4 bulbs may pull up to 8 amps & clearly blow a 5 amp fuse! If in doubt take it to an auto electrician...... The wiring needs to be correctly protected!

It was wired for a 4 wire flat trailer plug. the plug was ripped off and now there are wires coming from both tail lights and the drive lights on rear passenger and trailer dont work. Green, Black, brown/w...

You need to install a 3-2 wire converter. I suggest a CURT 56175 then
1.Using a test lamp, identify the corresponding wires in the harness for the left turn, right turn, tail lights and brake lights. 3. Temporarily remove the vehicle's negative battery cable from the battery. 4. Using wire taps, attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding vehicle harness wires identified in step 2 as indicated.
Converter Brown Wire: Tail Light Circuit Converter Yellow Wire: Left Turn Circuit Converter Red Wire: Brake Light Circuit Converter Green Wire: Right Turn Circuit
5. Locate a suitable mounting location for the ground eyelet on the vehicle near the converter on vehicle's frame or cross member.
And your ready to tow!

Trailer Wiring Harness

The trailer fuses should be located out in the engine compartment inside of the fuse/relay junction box.

That is unless the trailer connector on the vehicle and the wiring were installed by someone who used an after-market trailer connector, and if that is the case then you might find the fuses up under the dash or around the fuse/relay junction box, and the fuses will most likely be inside of in-line fuse holders that are part of the after-market wiring. Here are some diagrams that might help you out.

Where would I find the fan motor relay

The cooling fan relay on a 1996 to 2000 Plymouth Voyager The SSFR (Solid State Fan Relay) Cooling fan relay is located on the left front inner frame just behind the radiator. The radiator coolant fan relay is located on the inside front of the engine compartment near the left headlight assembly. You have to remove the air filter assembly, then look for a simple square relay with 4 wires running into it. It is mounted with 2 screws. It is the only relay at that location. If it has burned, you will need to replace the pigtail wiring harness.

Remove the air box beside the battery a 10 mm bolt and the relay is a four prong square box bolted on the frame with two 8mm bolts

Need wiring diagram for connecting a trailer lights etc to Chrystler Voyager

I would suggest purchasing the quick connect type for your model year. You don't have to cut wires, and it plugs right into the harness behind the trim panel. Saves time and doesn't damage the factory wiring.

I am trying to find the wiring connector in the rear for hooking up lights for pulling a trailer. any ideas where it is located at on 98 plymouth grand voyager se?

Depends on what you have for an adapter. If it's sort of like a "T" shape with 4 pin connector coming out side, then you should be able to find spot to adapt it, somewhere between rear bumper & rear wheels, along frame area usually. If all you have is a flat 4 connector, with wires, then easiest way is to remove rear corner trim panel behind taillight on drivers side, and splice/wire it in there to harness.

The trailer harness that was installed probably has a short inside the box that distributes power to the trailer pig-tail. Remove the trailer harness. You problem will be cured.
