Question about 1997 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid ES with the 3.5 motor. For the past 3 years, the check engine light has been on but has been running fine. I now want to sell it so I went down to the auto parts store and the codes said that the plugs, plug wires, crankshaft sensor and a oxygen sensor needed replacing. I replaced the plugs and crank sensor then drove it to town and it ran great. The Check engine light was still on so I stopped by the parts house and they cleared the codes for me. I went out the next morning and the car would not stay running when I put it in gear or took my foot off the gas. I disconnected the battery for a while and the check engine light went away and the car ran great again. Drove it 60 miles and the light came back on and it said the right rear oxygen sensor was bad but the car was still running great. I went out the next morning and tried to start it and it did it again, could not keep it running. Replaced the O2 sensor and it made no change. I was told I should replace the plugs back to Champions and did so with no change. Then swapped out the plug wires and again no change. Was told to check & replace the Ignition coil pack and did again with no change. Can a bad crank sensor cause this type of problem? I know it has to be in the ignition system tied to the computer that will not re-set it?s self by disconnecting the battery. Any thoughts?

You need to reset the ECM once you make any changes to the car.If you only change the sensor then it won't be picked up unless you reset the car using a proper diagnostic tool.Be careful to read all codes before you reset it.

I have a 2003 dodge intrepid es with the 3.5l motor 1 day I was driving and my car over heated and just shut off when I lifted the hood the radiator hose was busted I finally got it home and opened it up...

You need to find out what fault caused the check engine light to come on, until the fault code is retrieved from the engine control module memory you are 100% guessing. I think you have a misfire.
