Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I need a wiring diagram for the A/C system for my 98 XJ jeep, so that I can see if the ground wire that runs to the computer is cut or damaged. I have tested everything on the A/C system and the ground seems to be the problem. The computer is telling the A/C to turn on but the signal does not reach the switch. Any help?

I assume you mean the air conditioning system. By the computer, do you mean you have climate control? What switch are you referring to?

Biggest problem you will ruin into is that a schematic will tell you that a wire exists, but not where it is. Most times, you need to locate the wire and physically check it end to end...One note though; I have never seen a wire fail inside a harness unless from a short and burn. Most times damage, chafing or disconnect happens at the free ends and plug connections. Sure the relay is good?

1986 is the first, AMC EFI, used, in Jeeps.
this is the RENIX system (French, EFI injection)
sorry, no ASD then, not until 1991 .with real Chrysler EFI.
the ECU powers the fuel pump relay directly.
if the ECU has power, it will energize this relay, does it?

4.0L here.86-88 (same is true up to 1991)

98 JEEP XJ 4.0 PO138 CODE ENGINE RUNS GOOD BUT CEL IS ON

99 or 98/, you showed both in the the blue box
great the 4.0L engine displacement, nobody ever post engine.
congrats
The CEL glowing is and OBD2 feature, it tells you things that
are about to fail and things that have/
The ECU can even mimic bad sensors. (poorly) and fool you in to thinking car runs good, this magic cuts smog big time)
P0 is a federal code (USA) and is a standard.

this car has 2 oxygen sensor. one front and 1 rear.
the rear is failing. (bad sensor, road damaged or wires cut or melted)
it only is used to detected a bad Catalyst converter.
it monitors the CAT. it will not effect engine fueling rates.
The front sensor is the imporantant one.
most folks ignore it , unless getting smogged,

the B1S2 oxy sensor is sending an illegal output.
way over 1v.
caused by a cut wire to same. (it floats high)
or inside the sensor the heater B+ is shorted to the sensor output..
bad sensor or cut wires.

1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L AC wiring

Hope you can read it? If not I'll try something else. See the compressor relay, that line with arrowhead is load side of relay, when relay is energized that arrowhead moves to other terminal, that is a fuse protected circuit, goes hot with the key on, underhood fuse box/power distribution center f6--15amp. The left side of relay is control, needs voltage and ground. fuse f5--25 amp interior fuse box and is wired through selection switch. As you can see, the computer grounds control side of relay.
Your second paragraph sounds like a big voltage drop, somewhere, I'd have make sure battery is good and charged up, check battery connections and check your charging system.

Wiring diagram

So, pretty much you have everything plugged in except the grounding. Ground is shared throughout the entire body. The thick black cable from the battery can be connected to the engine block. usually there is a threaded stand off somewhere on the side of the engine. You also need a smaller ground cable connected from the battery to the right front fender. There should be a ground strap that goes from the cylinder head to the firewall and two or three ground wires connecting the computer to the left fender.
I generally compliment the system by using a ten gauge or larger wire and run it from the battery ground terminal to the right fender (not cutting the wire but removing insulation, forming a loop, using a short self tapping screw and washer, then connecting it to the firewall at both corners, then up to the computer grounds, then to the cross brace on the radiator then to the engine block. (all connections made as the first so the wire remains as a continuous run...one exception being that the corner at the firewall gets another wire attached with an end loop running through the firewall and attached to the lower rail of the dash frame.) Reason? poor grounding is the primary reason many electronic components fail, and one of the most neglected areas of the entire system.
Doing what I outlined ensures that there is always a good alternative ground path that is largely unaffected by corrosion at fender connections etc,
Set your system up as I said at the start but consider going further later. I'd also consider using a heavier gauge positive lead than the stock one which is pathetically thin (I use 00 welding cable for that but you don't need to go that far, but the thicker the wire the less the resistance)
Good luck
