Go to a local auto parts store and look at their repair manuals and they will have a diagram and description on how to remove the ignition switch without breaking it. good luck.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma and the ignition switch will not turn to the off position. What do I need to check?

Lillian, it could be a shifter/interlock problem, take out of park then forcefully put back in park and try key. Take into a good Tech., have them diagnose and estimate repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Unable to turn the key in ignition...a little play in steering wheel, but key refuses to turn

Trying smacking the shifter hard to the park position which it is already. There is a lock that stops the ignition from unlocking if the gear selector not getting into the P position all the way.

Cannot turn key in ignition to start car even after checking transmission and even rocking the car to make sure it is in park.

put key in ignition. tap back side of key with hamer or screwdriver etc towards the ignition. like youre trying to tap it further into ignition. not extremely hard but hard enough and it will turn. I promise you, it wil turn and start car, no problem. Marc

My windshiled wippers ,heater, radio, and turn lights stoped working

THE TROUBLE IS YOUR IGNITION SWITCH. THIS IS NOT THE IGNITION KEY & LOCK CYLINDER. THEY WORK TOGETHER, BUT THE ELECTRICAL IGNITION SWITCH IS ON THE STEERING COLUMN UNDER THE DASH. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE LOWER DASH PANEL & LOWER THE STEERING COLUMN. TO GET TO THE IGNITION SWITCH. GET A NEW IGNITION SWITCH,TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THE DIMMER SWITCH FOR THE HEADLIGHTS. IS MOUNTED PIGGY/BACK ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS IT'S PRETTY TRICKY. THE ROD GOING IN THE DIMMER SWITCH WILL HAVE TO BE SECURED. IF IT FALLS OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL & A LOT OF OTHER NIGHTMARE STUFF WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED, TO PUT THE ROD BACK IN PLACE. BOTH SWITCHES ARE ADJUSTABLE SO EVERYTHING WILL WORK RIGHT.

I have a 91 honda accord and something may be wrong with the ignition switch. When I put the key in the key won't move either way like the switch is jammed

Yeah, over time and use, the ignition key switch can jam or break. Take your car into a repair shop or dealership. They will diagnose and determine the problem, and help you decide the steps to take to fix your problem. I strongly recommend going to a dealership for most repairs and services, simply because they will fix your problem, take care of your car, and if they break something, they'll take full responsibility instead of pointing fingers until you say f#*& it!

the ignition switch needs to be adjusted by moving in the direction of the steering wheel it dosent have to moved much to make it activate when turned to the start positon. Not hard to do just adjusted one two days ago. even a cave man can do it, getter done!

1996 Chevy Cav. When i put key in to ignition,

Hi Jamie,
As you turn the key, **** the steering wheel hard side-to-side. The anti-theft interlock between the ignition switch and the steering is just jammed. Happens to all cars from time-to-time, and that's the fix.

Ignition

Occasionally the shift lock cable can stick and cause this problem. Try jiggling the shifter and see if that helps. You may need to replace the cable.

The chip in the key is purely electrical and will not prevent the key from mechanically turning the ignition switch.
