Question about 1998 Land Rover Range Rover

Replaced starter, now struggling to start and making a grinding noise once it fires. runs perfect once started and I have a gearbox failure indicator on. I took back to rr dealer that installed the starter and they say starter is fine.

    starter is bosch sr0801x. Is this the right starter ? Thanks for your help

    battery corrected starting issue, though there is a little rough noise still when cranking. Took to shop yesterday to have A.C charged and new radio programmed. The check engine light was on and the mechanic hooked up diagnostics. Left and radio is working, A.C cool and engine light off. Now auto on A.C is acting up, engine light is back on. bought the car five days ago. when you cranked it up it was reving high until you put in drive then rpm's dropped. now when you crank rpm's are below one thousand and oil sensor comes on and temp goes to hot. As soon as you get rpm's over one thousand the oil light goes off but vehicle runs hot. However if I crank and leave in drive way sometimes the rpm's will go over one thousand and will run right there forever and not get hot.

    Cant afford to go back to these crooks, any help?

    no thermostat, replaced and added water to radiator. Overheating not a problem now after 40 min road test. Cleaned throttle body and eradicate revving stopped. Now transmission is not letting out of gear until rpm's reach 3500 very high, before it was shifting to quickly and lagging in every gear. Is there a vacuum line loose or is this a sensor on the transmission? Or the computer?

Its not right thats for sure ask nicely for them to have another look ,might have a starter with the wrong number of teeth on

    make of starter not a problem its the number of teeth on the starter dog ,thinking about it if this is an automatic ??then other problem could be the metal plate on the back of the torque converter that bolts to the crankshaft ,its split between the bolt holes allowing it to flex when starter pinion turns it ,this will make an un earthly sort of grinding noise as well.Try another dealer as well sounds like your one are a load of know all know nothing latex gloved white overhauls layabouts .they should not have released the vehicle till it was 100%

    got to be quick here as its its getting light and i need to go into elche to pick up some rear brake shoes for a yank tank cheroke jeep,now let me see ??have to think about this one when i get a bit more time so i will leave it on e mai.RPM on idle should be about 800,now engine check light could be nothing more than a vacumn pipe loose,auto on AC is a major issue possibly because that is controled by a computer and if thats gone then its a lot of money .but i just bypass the computers when i get a major problem and use blower motor as temperature control,,like colder ¿¿??increase blower speed .But it is possible that the """"technician """" has left a pipe loose and its comes off from the vacumn line that controls the flaps in the heater unit,Take it back to the garage because they should give warrenty on their repairs.When you park it on drive and let it run is it with the AC on ?? because if it is then this is why its not running hot ,the AC makes the rad fan work.

    not sure about gearchange but i would still check for a vacumn pipe somewhere just as a matter of course but i havent worked on one so wouldnt know if it was a convential auto box or a computer controlled gearchange.As for rad you must put antifreeze in or you will corrode the engine away from the inside,and renew thermostat or you will cause excessive internal engine wear because its not reaching the correct operating temperature in the winter months

You have the polarity of the battery backward somewhere. Did you replace the starter and hook it up backwards. Difficult but possible. Check your positive and negative on the battery itself.

are you sure the starters are the exact ones for your vehicle engine/gearbox check out the vin numbers etc with the manufacturer who should be able to give definate part i expect your getting OEM parts that may not be an exact match as wearing on the tip indicates 1. not reaching into housing far enough 2.wrong size bendix ,hope this helps must be very frustrating

Are you saying the starter is grinding but the engine is not cranking, or the engine is cranking and making noise and not starting ?

I had the same problem, make sure your wires are not exposed and shorting on some piece of metal, that could cause a fire. Other than that I would check that starter again, it sounds like it is seized or maybe you have the wires on backwards. If you have an oil leak and oil gets into that starter it will destroy it. I have a 99 Ford Superduty 7.3 Diesel. It is making a really bad grinding/screeching sound just after it starts and is warming up. It wouldn't ******* off all the way even after the key was turned


indicates that the starter motor is stuck in the ring gear
possibly faulty starter relay or starter solenoid
pull the starter as the pinion over ride clutch is probably damaged ( noise ) and have the start circuit and relay checked
have the starter bench tested for serviceability by an accredited auto electrician

Yes, you are probably right about the spacer or shim. A salvage yard should have lots of them for little or nothing. When you remove the starter for the spacer, check the drive gear end of the starter for severe wear. If it is chewed off very bad, have a new drive gear put on, or replace the starter.

When i try to start the car it makes a funny sound and wont start it sounds like something is not catching


Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

Slammed into gear, once moving started to make grinding nuts and bolts type of noise


You most likely have a serious gearbox problem.
To minimise further damage don't drive it until the problem is rectified.
Get a mechanic to assess the problem - you may need a replacement gearbox.
