The thermostat solution could be right.
The thermostat can not only stay closed too much and cause overheating, but open all the time or too much, and cause cooling.

1997 bmw 328i dash lights all lit up at once and after several minutes they faded, and eventually the headlights and dashboard lights dimmed.

Alternator. Have it tested with a voltmeter while on the car and running. Or take it off and have it tested. The current to run the car and the accessories is from the alternator when the engine is running. The battery light coming on alerts you that the alternator is not doing its job.

to check oil start vehicle in park and let idle, open large allen bolt [normally 17mm] on g/box sump, oil should spill from aperture. if not top up until it does. this must be done at a temperature of less than 30 degrees celsius as oil expands at higher temperatures.

Check the blown wire on the plug connection of the tail lights. They usualy burn. Then you just have to cut is off and give it an earth on the light circuit board.

I have a 1997 BMW 328i sedan. I replaced everything in the A/C from the firewall forward. The upper vents in the car blow cold, 45 degrees in the vent. However, I am getting hot air coming out from under...

There's nothing special from BMW it will be one of the airtake valves not shut properly, or stuck in open position. Follow the hot air and try to access the source to identify the actual problem

If you'll need something more detai, just drop me a line

Backing signal keeps on blinking on my bmw x5

Sorry this is not a solution, but my 1999 BMW 328i also has a problem on this area. My left signal keeps blinking even though I have the lever in neutral. Can somebody tell me what the problem might be? thanks.

Overheating

Generally when the heater isn't heating anything and putting out cold air the heater core is bad. I have never worked on a BMW before and have never heard of a heater core causeing overheating, but because they are linked, it maybe a clog in the core causing poor coolant circulation.
