If the plastic handle broke can you still get at wire cable? If so, try using vice-grip pliers, get ahold of cable and pull. Sometimes it helps to have a helper standing at the end of hood, in the area of release mechanism, have them pop the hood with palm of hand as you pull on the cable. Otherwise I'd try to get at release mechanism by removing the front grille if possible or try to get at it from under the vehicle?
