What to do with plastic gear in starter housing that continues to strip and then won't turn over engine.

I have had to replace the starter housing twice on this trimmer and shortly a third time. The plastic gear that engages to turn engine over quickly wears down and slips when engaging with flywheel rendering the trimmer useless as you cannot get it to turn over enough to start. Any suggestions?

There is nothing you can do to fix this issue, it is a poorly designed part, wrong material.

Turn key. starter engages flywheel engine start to turn over. Then starter disengages form flywheel but continues to spin without care actually starting.


There maybe a problem with starter motor? Some of the national brand auto stores will test starter for you. Of course, you have to take it off and take it to them.


You could take the starter off, lay it on the ground, Hook up jumper cables properly from starter to battery. The starter should kick-out the drive gear and spin. If starter drive gear kicks out and in, something is wrong. Anymore I replace starter solenoid and starter motor as an assembly.

It wouldn't hurt anything to check flywheel teeth while your at it.

Why will it crank but won`t turn over?


Have you checked for correct fuel pressure? Most parts stores have a loan-a-tool fuel pressure gauge kit, and if you remove the plastic engine cover you will find a fuel rail port to attach the tester. Just because you replaced with new pump, don't assume it is good. Many cheap aftermarket pumps are noisy and fail often.

If pressure is good, insure you have spark to the plugs.

sounds like you have a stripped starter gear or stripped fly wheel, I'd pry for the stripped starter gear.

you need to have a spacer put it ther to take up the slack in it ther was won in ther probably at won time or another replace it go to the dealer to make sure you HAve the Right One For Sure then go some Were Else to put it in and ask them Please can you Help Me Please Rember Be Nice And Be Thank full afterwards Ok

It won't turn over


Try this procedure:
Check the battery like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.
If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
Check that the battery cable plus post, goes to the starter, Minus post to a good ground, like the engine.
If wiring is ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter.
Problem is most likely the Solenoid's bendix gear or starting relay, Have someone bang on the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging the bendix gear..

I turn key and starter spin but will not engage flywheel.


You have one of two problems: Either the starter drive on your starter is defective and is not engaging the flywheel to crank the engine, or the flywheel has some broken or damaged teeth that are preventing the starter from engaging.
Starters come in a variety of designs. On some, the solenoid is mounted on top of the starter. When you turn the key, the solenoid routes current to the starter motor and at the same time pulls a lever that slides the drive gear mechanism out so it will engage the flywheel and crank the engine. If the solenoid is weak or damaged, it may not be strong enough to overcome the spring tension that retracts the drive gear. So the starter spins but doesn't crank the engine.
On other starters, the solenoid is mounted remotely. When the starter motor starts to spin, it ratchets out so the drive gear will engage the flywheel and crank the engine. If the drive mechanism is damaged or hung up, the motor may spin but not crank the engine.
Regardless of what type of starter you have, it will have to come out for further inspection. The drive gear (which is sometimes referred to as a "Bendix drive") should move out when the starter starts to spin. The drive gear usually has a one-way clutch that is supposed to protect the starter against damage if someone keeps cranking the engine once it starts. The gear should turn one way but not the other. If the gear is locked up or turns freely either way, the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. If the drive can't be replaced separately, you'll have to replace the entire starter.
Starter Testing If the drive seems okay, the starter should be "bench tested" using jumper cables or special equipment designed for this purpose.
CAUTION: Be careful because a starter develops a lot of torque. It should be held down with a strap or clamped in a vice (be careful not to crush or deform the housing!) before voltage is applied.
A simple no-load bench test can be performed with a battery and a pair of jumper cables to see if a starter motor will spin. But this test alone won't tell you if the starter is good or bad because a weak starter that lacks sufficient power to crank an engine at the proper speed (usually a minimum of 250 to 500 rpm) may still spin up to several thousand rpm when voltage is applied with no load.
A better method of determining a starter's condition is to have it tested on equipment that measures the starter's "amp draw." A good starter should normally draw a current of 60 to 150 amps, depending on the size or power rating of the starter. Some "high torque" GM starters may draw up to 250 amps, so refer to the OEM specifications to make sure the amp draw is within the acceptable range.
If the starter does not spin freely, or draws an unusually high or low number of amps, it is defective and replacement is required.
An unusually high current draw and low free turning speed typically indicate a shorted armature, grounded armature or field coils, or excessive friction within the starter itself (dirty, worn or binding bearings or bushings, a bent armature shaft or contact between the armature and field coils). The magnets in permanent magnet starters can sometimes break or separate from the housing and drag against the armature.
A starter that does not turn and draws a high current may have a ground in the terminal or field coils, or a frozen armature.
Failure to spin and zero current draw indicates an open field circuit, open armature coils, defective brushes or a defective solenoid.
Low free turning speed combined with a low current draw indicates high internal resistance (bad connections, bad brushes, open field coils or armature windings).

Quadzilla starter motor turning but not engine


The starter has two parts. the large part of the starter is a motor that turns the gear that engages the flywheel. the smaller part of the starter is a solenoid that pushes the gear foreward to align the starter gear to the flywheel. Sounds to me that either the starter shaft or gear have become stripped, or the sterter solenoid is not pushing the starter gear foreward. Most likely the solenoid failed.

After starting my Chrysler town and country and when I release the ignition key back to run position the starter continues to run. I then turn off the ignition key and the starter still runs. The only way...


You will need to replace the starter and or solenoid as the starter drive is not disengaging the starter gear and power is constantly being fed to the solenoid. Don't drive the vehicle this way as the starter drive will burn up and possibly strip the starter gear which is a much more major problem to fix.

Where is the starter located on 1985 Honda Civic?


The starter is located on the firewall side of the engine block, adjacent to the flywheel or torque converter housing. Early models, use a direct drive type starter, while the later models use a gear reduction starter. Otherwise, the two units are similar in operation and service. Both starters are 4-pole, series wound, DC units to which an outboard solenoid is mounted. When the ignition switch is turned to the start position, the solenoid armature is drawn in, engaging the starter pinion with the flywheel. When the starter pinion and flywheel are fully engaged, the solenoid armature closes the main contacts for the starter, causing the starter to crank the engine. When the engine starts, the increased speed of the flywheel causes the gear to overrun the starter clutch and rotor. The gear continues in full mesh until the ignition is switched from the start to the on position, interrupting the starter current. The shift lever spring then returns the gear to its neutral position.

The headlight motor continues to run after the light has closed


I had this problem too. The problem is from a stripped plastic gear inside the motor housing. For some reason (poor engineering?) the motor keeps getting power even after the head light is closed. I purchased a new plastic gear and it only lasted me about 2 months. I recommend you check out the site below and purchase a metal gear. I did and my headlight is still working fine after a year.
