You have a pulley alignment issue somewhere, check the idler pulley bearing and look to see which pulley is not in line with the rest. Also pay close attention to the crank pulley, it may be "walking" off the inner rubber vibration isolation ring.

My 99 explorer makes a screeching sound


Have your serpentine belt checked for normal wear and tear. When the belts get worn out, they can slip on the pulleys designed to move the belt and cause such a screeching sound. It's annoying and embarrassing all at the same time.

My 1998 chevy prizm has a squealing noise from the serpentine belt area.


Hello ed.... The serpentine belt or one of the pulleys that it turns is making that annoying sound. Carefully inspect the belt using a flashlight to illuminate any rips or tears, and inspect each of the pulleys looking for grease or heat marks.

Often, the belt has to be replaced and when that is being done, each pulley can be closely examined for wear and tear, even being frozen up. Joe

I have a 1998 plymouth voyager. The serpentine belt makes a clicking/ticking noise when I drive. I have had tears in the belt in the past and it has been replaced twice. Could my problem be that I need a...


If any of the items running on the belt go bad you could destroy a serpentine belt. If the tensioner is going bad and allows the belt to jump around on the groove pulleys it will tear the belt. My tensioner was making sounds like you describe and I did not locate the sound and deal with it immediately. When driving home it broke into pieces and was left on the side of the road. The pulley bearing could be bad or the tensioner itself could be frozen and the arm is not moving. A bad tensioner creates a lot of strange sounds. I purchased a tensioner for $45 and will have it installed today. If you have the 3.3 motor then the automatic tensioner is held on by a single nut. You have to jack up the car crawl underneath and reach up between the alternator mount and the rear exhaust manifold . The access to the nut is finger tip small. You will need a 14mm 6 point socket , a short extension, a long extension, a short breaker bar,a socket wrench, and a pivot joint for the extensions. Getting the nut onto the new tensioner is the hard part. Finger tight the nut and double check that the tensioner is positioned correctly in the mounting slot. Then tighten down the nut and put the belt back on.

Hello. your vehicle has one belt under the hood which powers several components. This is called a serpentine belt. You can inspect it and look for signs of wear, cracks, tears etc. However, the bottom line is if the serpentine belt is in tact, it will operate the components it powers. Your air conditioning may merely need to be recharged. Drive to a local garage which advertises a/c service. Joe

1995 cadillac deville tears up the serpentine belt


usally tearing belts is the ac compressor not turning or poorly. your tension could be going bad also alllowing the belt to flex and contact another object. you will need to block your wheels.open the hood. have a freind rev the engine in cycles for you to watch and see if the belt flexes or the ac commperssor is the cause

Torn Serpentine Belt. Bad belt driver


You say belt driver? The belt runs on a series of pullys, there should be a pic./diagram on the radiator support that shows the routing of the belt. simply take the belt off and check each pully( they will either drive the belt or be idlers/tension pullys)to see which one has any "side to side" motion. If it is on a "driver" you are looking at replacing that part(water pump,power steering pump. etc.), as the real problem will be a bad bearing in that unit.
