Speedygreen 3000. Left wheel fell off while using. How is that wheel secured to the shaft? Hub cap remained on but I do not see anything to indicate how it was fastened

SOURCE: CV replacement

You don't have to pull the hub! No spring compressor needed. Either unhook the steering knuckle from the strut or thre lower ball joint and swing it out away from the car. Remeber to remove the brake calipers and tie rod ends to get more "swing". It takes a little palying with to manuver it out but you can do it.

hi there, i have 2 mazda6s, both off which i needed to removed the inner axels on, so far you have done every thing right :), but unfortunatly due to mazdas sloppy assembly the inner axles are near impossible to remove, you could try getting a 2 or 3 legged puller and remove the brake calliper and disk then try and "pull" the shaft out, but unfortunatly i doubt will work. your second option would be to use a hydraulic ram to press it out, but again due to mazdas sloppy work it is near impossible with out damaging the hub, ive tryed both option and none of wich worked, so i brought 4 second hand hubs and outer C.Vs, hope this helps.

Here is the easiest way . take a 14mm socket and extentsion and place it on the bolts and place againt your axle tube and start your truck and turn your wheel against it instead of pounding you will use your powersteering like a press to get your hub out its quicker and less strenous than pounding on the bolts ive done this many times i even made a extentsion for it i use a 14mm 1/2 drive shallow socket and a extension thats about 4 inches long i know im posting late on this one but if it helps anyone out then great

Once you remove the locking hub, the hub and bearing unbolt. There are two different styles of locking hubs. One is held on with a large snap ring that you can pinch with your hands. Once that's out you can pull the locking hub off. The other style bolts on with about 6 or 7 small allen or torx head bolts. Once you remove the bolts the hub pulls out also. They can sometimes get stuck and will require some force.
The axle is also a bit tricky to remove if you've never done it before. You will need two fairly large pry bars and pry between the u-joint ears and the axle tube evenly on both sides to push it out. The axle seal is very tight, also pricey if you damage it, so be careful.

Steering wheel changes


Here is the simple steps to change the old steering wheel and install the new one.

Remove the Original Steering Wheel

1.Read instructions that come with the steering wheel, and gather the following tools: screwdriver, pliers and a puller.
2.Point wheels straight ahead.
3.Disconnect battery or pull horn fuse before removing the old wheel. This prevents the horn from shorting out or blowing during installation.
4.Remove the horn mechanism by doing one or more of the following steps: Press down on the horn cap or ring and turn; remove the emblem cap from its snapped-in position by grabbing it and pulling it toward you or prying it loose; or if the horn ring is secured by screws that are concealed in the rear side of the wheel spokes, use a screwdriver to remove the screws and the ring.
5.Remove horn wire or spring-loaded metal plunger from plastic housing by either pulling straight out on the metal plunger or, on most models, by twisting the plastic sleeve to the left and then pulling out. Cut the wire off the plastic sleeve and keep the sleeve for later use.
6.Remove the shaft-nut retainer clip, if it is present, and keep for later use. Remove the shaft nut, which holds the wheel to the shaft.
7.Mark the shaft at the twelve o'clock position so that you will know where to position the top of the new wheel.
8.Insert a conventional puller into the two tapped holes which appear in the hub of the old wheel and pull off the steering shaft.
9.Remove the original wheel.

Installing the New Steering Wheel

1.Place the small tubular metal sleeve down over the steering shaft.
2.Position hub on splined shaft, making certain that the shaft is properly positioned using the mark you made in step 7. You may have to rotate the plastic horn contact tube slightly to align it with the appropriate hole through the hub.
3.Insert plastic sleeve and spring from step 5 without wire into plastic horn housing. If the plastic sleeve extends above the top bolt surface of the custom hub, cut down the sleeve so that it is 1/8-inch below the top of the hub. Remove sleeve.
4.Insert through the plastic sleeve the wire lead that was supplied in the wheel kit. One end will not pass through the sleeve. This bell-shaped end will go into the horn contact housing. Insert the sleeve and wire into the housing and lock into position.
5.Route wire around the hub from the ten o'clock position to about the two o'clock position to properly align wheel. Position post cover and wheel on hub. Make certain that the wire lead passes through the appropriate holes in the two o'clock position. Using the three shoulder bolts provided, fasten the hub, post cover and wheel together, but do not tighten.
6.Check wheel for proper positioning. If correct, reinstall the shaft nut from step 6 and tighten. Reinstall shaft-nut retainer clip. If the retainer does not fit into the groove on the shaft, tighten the nut until it will fit as originally located.
7.Remove shoulder bolts and reinstall them through the retainer ring with the fiber side toward you. Tighten the shoulder bolts with caution - excess torque will result in damage to the hub. The shaft nut, if correctly tightened, will firmly hold the hub and wheel assembly on the shaft.
8.Connect wire lead to the connector on the retainer ring. Position spring on center nut. Align the dimples of the horn cap with reliefs in fiber material and push into the dimples past the fiber. Turn cap left or right until tight.
9.Reconnect battery or replace fuse.

Right wheel fell off how do I put it back together need a schematic


if your wheel fell off there is no shematic that i know of however check to see if the studs are stripped if so pull the wheel ( POP-OFF THE BEARING CAP WITH A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER) unscrew thew wheel nut and pull the wheel (being careful not to drop the bearings on the ground ) then with an old nut or board (2 by 4) or something similar so you don't flare the stud so that it wont go through the hole. drive studs out and replace (fairly cheap). when you put the new studs in make sure that the teeth on the back of the hub line up with the teeth on the studs before you drive them in.if the whole fell off make sure that the threads on the spline (shaft) are not damaged. if so repair the threads and get new bearings . ( bearings only go in one way) and nut and cotter pin. (if you don't know that the race is any good take the hub to the auto parts store and ask the attendant at the counter) when reassembling do not over tighten the wheel nut and BE SURE TO PUT THE COTTER PIN IN AND BEND 1 PRONG BACK.

Make sure 2- wheel drive is selected.
Jack up the vehicle front and support on axle stands. Remove the wheel.
Remove the brake caliper. It bolts onto the hub carrier(aka knuckle) with 2 bolts from the vehicle side of the carrier so you cant see them without sticking your head into the wheel arch. Slide the caliper off the rotor and hub and hang it with a piece of wire inside the wheel arch. Dont let it hang on the pipe it is connected to. The caliper may be difficult to remove if the rotor has a ridge on its outer edge due to wear.
Remove ABS speed sensor(2 bolts to remove) behind the hub
Next comes the hub assembly. :
  • Shift on the fly:Remove 6 bolts on the cap then the cap itself. Next the snap ring/circlip and the shim behind it.(On the piece of shaft now visible) and then you can pull off the hub flange. Remove the screw on the lock washer and then the washer itself. Remove the hub nut.The hub assembly(with rotor) will now pull off the shaft. Remove inner bearing and oil seal.
  • Manual hub: Select transmission 2H and "Free" on the hub. and run the vehicle about 100 m/300 ft.Remove 6 bolts on the cap then the cap itself. Next the snap ring/circlip and the shim behind it. Remove body assembly.
Remove the bottom ball joint on the hub carrier.(Ball joint removal tool may be needed to free the ball joint. Dont go hammering it. That will damage the thread) Swing the carrier upwards and you should have just enough free space to pull the shaft from the hub carrier. If not remove the top balljoint as well. Remove the clamp/SS strip from the inner CV rubber boot. Pull the boot back on the shaft. Remove the circlip from inside the DOJ case. The shaft can now be pulled from the DOJ case.
Remember to preload the wheel bearing on reassembly. Tighten the hubnut to 29 N.m. then loosen fully. Tighten again by hand. Connect a spring scale to the wheel stud. Pulling on the scale in the direction of rotation should give a reading of 2-2.5 kg/4.4-5.5 lb(new bearing) or 1.2-1.8kg/2.6-4 lb(used bearing) when the rotor starts to move. If it does not, tighten the hub nut a littl and measure again. Repeat till the correct measurement is achieved. See diagram.

What is the trick to removing the driver side CV joint?


To remove the cv joint/transaxle, first remove the wheel. Remove the brake caliper and pads. Be sure to tie up the brake caliper to keep out of way. Once the caliper is removed, slide the brake rotor off. Remove the center cap over hub (if capped). Remove the kotter pin and nut hold shaft in place. There are two bolts on the back side that connect the strut to the wheel hub. remove those bolts. Keep in mind that they are not the same size, the bolt heads are angled. To make sure you put the right bolts in place, Take two envelopes and mark top on one and bottom on the other. I had an 89 Horizon (same as Omni), so I did the same with the envelopes. Separate the strut from the hub assembly. Next, while pushing in on the cv joint, carefully pull hub assembly out and turn either left or right. Once you have remove the shaft from hub, using a pry bar, insert pry bar between tranny and axle and pop out. It is that easy. Let me know if there is anything else you may need help with.

I would like to know if the wheel bearing is in the shaft or the hub?


The Constant Velocity (CV) joints are located on the inner and outer edges of the axle shaft. The axle shaft runs through the hub and bearing in the spindle.

2001 4 x 4 tacoma front wheel fell off. Looks


The drive shaft is inserted into a splined hub. The hub has a bearing that is pressed in, and that may have been the cause.
Very rare. Was there any grinding noise before it fell off ?

I have a Disco II and the wheel hub bearing went and i'm tryign to change it but i cant seem to get the hub off, can any one help with a step to step guide or something, thanks.


RAVE says the following:
1) Release ABS Sensor harness grommet from inner wing valance and disconnect multi plug.
2) Raise front of vehicle.
3) Remove road wheel.
4) Pull ABS Sensor harness through aperture into wheel arch.
5) Release harness from brackets on inner wing valance, suspension turret and front hub.
6) Release stake from drive shaft nut
7) Remove drive shaft nut with assistance & discard.
8) Remove front brake disk (Remove calliper, pad holder, screw and tap to remove)
9) Remove 4 bolts securing wheel hub to steering knuckle.
10) Release wheel hub from steering knuckle then remove wheel hub and drive shaft assembly from axle. DO NOT REMOVE ABS SENSOR FROM HUB. HUB AND SENSOR ARE SUPPLIED AS AN ASSEMBLY.
11) Position the wheel hub and drive shaft on a press, place supports beneath the wheel studs and press the drive shaft from the wheel hub.
12) Remove drive shaft oil seal from axle casing.

Refit is mostly the reverse, you need to take care to lubricate things in the right places and put loctite on the drive shaft and locate the loom and torque everything right.

How to change c.v joint


Remove wheel, brake caliper and disc, end cap and circlip (if fitted) 6 bolts that hold the hub drive, undo and remove the hub nut by knocking back the lock washer, remove the inner hub lock nut and remove the hub assembley. remove the 6 bolts that hold the hub shaft and remove that.There will be either oil or liquid grease in it, Now you will see the drive shaft and CV joint, just pull it out. Clean all the oil or grease.knock off the old CV joint and knock on a new one, they have securing clips inside but will knock off with a hammer.refit is reversal of removal. Use silicon sealant to seal the hub shaft when you put it back. You will need to fill the swivel assembley with liquid grease. you will see the filler plug on the swivel housing, put in about half a liter Its possible you may need to replace oil seals, check as you go along. to adjust the hub play, tighten the inner hub nut until it goes tight then back it off until the hub can move freely and effortlessly, then grab the hub and pull back and forth to see how much play is there, a little is permissable, so adjust to suit. Fit and lock the washer and tighten the outer locknut. Then as i said refit as you removed. These are safety related parts , so please make sure the items are tightly secured, aftreall you dont want the wheel to fall off.

  1. Remove the tire and wheel center cap.
  2. Remove the drive axle nut.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel. .
  4. Remove the brake rotor.
  5. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Place a brass drift against the outer end of the wheel drive shaft in order to protect the wheel drive shaft threads. Sharply strike the brass drift with the hammer. Do not attempt to remove the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing at this time.
  6. Remove the wheel hub and bearing from the steering knuckle by removing the three bolts coming in from the back side of the knuckle.
Of course you may have to use a hammer to loosen the bearing from the knuckle.
