Question about Lincoln Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2004, automatic, all wheel drive lincoln aviator starts right up, sounds good, but when I put it in gear it will not move. I tried reverse and it won't do that either.

I drove to the store and the car was running fine. When I came out and got ready to leave, car wouldn't move.

Original question: Thanks to Bill Boyd for answer Could it be the shifter cable? 2004 automatic AWD lincoln aviator starts right up,shift gears, won't move, reverse not working either.

if it starts up, then the shifter cable is moving and operating the park and neutral switches unless the cable has disconnected at the box
no forward and reverse indicates that the torque converter serv/solenoid is not function correctly

My gears want move in drive or reverse but will if I put in 3rd gear then drive once driving tranny shifts smoove could that be a bad module

If you can get it to work right by doing that (shift threw all gears), then it isn't the module. I would start with checking ground points. Battery to body, battery to engine and engine to body. These are cables. Then there are 1 or 2 grounds on the engine from the harness and a couple on the transmission. If these check out, then I would say you have a bad harness in the transmission. Goes to the solenoid pack/ valve body.

You could possibly have wheel bearing problems
that is very serious. If you can't check yourself
hire somebody. It means your wheel or wheels could
come off going down the interstate. Jack up one
side to clear the ground. Wiggle the wheel and tire
if it's tight ok, if it's loose very important to fix it
i think the AWD on the 04 is full time. The 05 can be cut off.
hope it's not too bad.

2004 Lincoln aviator goes into gear but won't move

bad transmission maybe. Try going into a lower gear (2 or 1) and giving it a little gas and holding it there. (about 2500 rpm) Hold it there for about 30 seconds.
If it still doesnt move, look under at the side of the transmission where the shifter cable connects and make sure it is moving.
Make sure the brake is on and the wheels are blocked and have a friend shift it back and forth while you look.
Sometimes, the connection pin comes out and you wont shift. .
If it does move right away, head to the transmission shop.

Gear shifting is having issues. Neutral is reverse, have to put in 3rd gear to drive, if u put in drive the car won't go. Now, car won't start and if u put it in any gear it thinks it is in revese just by...

This is a factory defect. My unit started to fail at about 80k.It finally got to the point that I had to pull the entire shifter vertically to engage the shifter. And then it would not engage. It took me two hours of fiddling with it to get it in reverse. Then another twenty minutes in the street for drive. Finally got it to the dealer where it was replaced under extended warranty. You might as well get it over with.

I am able to move the gear shift, but the vehicle stays stuck in reverse. When I put the gear shift in R, Drive or any other gear the car does not move or even sound like its ingaging anything.

Maybe the shifter cable. I would look under the car on the drivers side of the transmission, with the wheels blocked, have someone operator the gear shifter and see if it is moving the shift lever on the transmission.

The floor shift to put automatic transmission in gear is loose.

you have to remove the console cover to get access to the bolts that hold the shift assembly to the floor. I think there are 4.

You probably have to remove the shift bezel cover (PRNDL), remove the shift knob to get the console off.
